How to Draw a Woman

Completes woman drawing with realistic shadows and details.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw a woman step by step. Here you will learn how to sketch correct female body proportions, facial features, clothing, and shading using simple construction techniques.

This lesson is largely based on our main person drawing tutorial while introducing the characteristic features and elements of the female figure.

Here, we will draw a woman in business attire. You can choose the clothing and appearance according to your taste.

How to draw a woman step by step

Step 1: Sketch the basic framework

Let’s start by building a stick figure. This will help us immediately establish the framework of the character we are going to draw. You can make the shoulders and pelvis approximately the same width or make the hips slightly wider.

Step 2: Sketch the woman’s limbs

Mark the limbs with light lines in a contrapposto pose to create a natural stance. The woman’s height in this tutorial is approximately equal to the length of six heads. The left knee should be slightly lower than the right knee. The right arm should be bent at a right angle at the elbow.

Step 3: Shape the torso smoothly

Mark the neck with a short cylinder. Then connect the pelvis and rib cage with smooth lines to create the contours of the torso. The transition from the chest to the pelvis should be very smooth. Also, draw two intersecting facial guidelines. These will serve as useful landmarks for adding the facial features in the following steps. Both lines should divide the face into equal parts.

Step 4: Build the arms and legs

Now work on the woman’s limbs. The arms and legs resemble smooth, graceful cylinders connected by rounded shapes. Avoid making the limbs too thin or too large. The hips and legs should have very smooth curves. The contours of the arms are almost straight.

Step 5: Sketch the woman’s facial features

We marked the facial guidelines earlier. Use these landmarks now to sketch the female eyes, small nose, and mouth. The distance between the mouth and nose is much smaller than the distance between the nose and eyes. Note that the facial features are slightly offset from the vertical line of symmetry.

Step 6: Refine the woman’s face

Using the previously marked contours, begin drawing the woman’s facial features and bringing them to a finished form. Draw the eyes with clean lines, making the upper eyelashes fairly thick. Add the pupils, then outline the eyebrows, nose, and smiling mouth.

Step 7: Refine the hairstyle

First, refine the contours of the hair, making them smoother and cleaner to create the overall mass. Then mark the central part that divides the hairstyle into two sections and add the hair texture. Do not draw every individual hair; simply indicate the main strands.

Step 8: Draw the business shirt

Now work on the body. Draw the business shirt with the top button left open. The clothing should follow the waist without looking tight. Otherwise, it will resemble a comic book superhero outfit. Be sure to draw the folds and slightly widen the shirt’s outline around them. Do not forget the collar and buttons.

Step 9: Detail the sleeves and cuffs

Continue the lines of the torso to refine the sleeves, then draw the shirt cuffs. Add several small folds to the fabric. These folds on the sleeves will make the drawing look more natural.

Step 10: Refine the arms

Now draw the woman’s arms in detail. The most difficult part is drawing the hands and fingers. The fingers should taper smoothly from the base toward the tips. Use short, light strokes to indicate the fingernails, being careful not to add too much detail.

Step 11: Outline the fitted skirt

Now, draw the skirt, using smooth lines. The skirt should fit closely around the hips. Use the same contour for the outer edge of the thigh and the corresponding edge of the skirt. Add a few horizontal folds to the skirt to make it look more dimensional.

Step 12: Refine the legs and shoes

Outline the legs with smoother lines while gradually erasing the construction lines marked earlier. Draw the shoes on the feet and indicate the soles. Check the entire woman drawing for symmetry and a natural body structure.

Step 13: Add hatching to the woman drawing

Now make the woman drawing more dimensional and complete. Use dense, even hatching in areas hidden from the light. To make the shadows darker and increase the contrast, add another layer of hatching where necessary.

Practicing female figure drawing

As we always like to say, people are very different. We all have different body types, facial features, and even different ways of standing, sitting, and moving.

All of this gives you enormous creative freedom when drawing the human figure. One of the most important parts of learning to draw the female figure, and the human figure in general, is drawing from life, from reference, and from memory.

This is the best way to reinforce the skills you’ve learned.

Find several reference photos online, or ask someone to pose for you. Using the techniques from this tutorial, try to draw the specific person in front of you.

Pay close attention to their facial features, proportions, and the unique characteristics of their pose.

Together, they form a complete learning path that helps artists develop a broad range of human figure drawing skills.
