How to Draw a Star

This drawing tutorial is simple, but it also provides a useful exercise in accuracy. Here, we will show you how to draw a five-pointed star step-by-step.

Step 1: Draw the first lines

You can use a ruler for this tutorial, but drawing the star freehand is much better practice. Start by drawing two straight lines that meet at an angle, leaving enough space around them for the remaining points of the star.

Step 2: Add another angled line

Draw another angled line starting from the end of the right line. Keep the length close to the previous lines so the five points of the star will look even when the outline is finished.

Step 3: Connect the remaining ends

Connect the remaining open ends with straight lines to complete the outline of the five-pointed star. Try to keep each line clean and straight so the shape looks neat.

Step 4: Check the star shape

At this stage, your drawing should look like a complete star with several construction lines crossing through the middle. If one of the points looks uneven, this is a good time to correct it.

Step 5: Erase the inner lines

Carefully erase the lines that remain inside the star. When you’re done, you should have a clean outline without any unnecessary construction marks.

Step 6: Divide the star faces

Draw straight lines from the center of the star toward each point. These lines divide the star into flat faces and prepare it for the final shading.

Step 7: Shade alternating star faces

Add simple, even hatching to one side of each face of the star. Keep the strokes parallel and consistent to give the drawing a clean appearance.

Even though a star looks simple, it’s actually a great exercise for drawing straight lines and keeping everything even.

After a few attempts, you’ll notice that your hand starts placing the lines much more confidently, even without a ruler.
