How to Draw Spider-Man on His Web

Spider-Man drawing with the superhero standing at the center of a large web.

This step-by-step tutorial will show you how to draw Spider-Man on his web in the style of classic superhero comics.

In this tutorial, we chose to use the classic comic style of The Amazing Spider-Man. Here, Peter Parker in his classic suit stands at the center of a web in a ready-for-combat pose – a composition often seen on covers and in classic storylines.

The guide largely continues and develops our main Spider-Man drawing tutorial, but shows the hero in a completely different pose and uses a noticeably different sequence of steps.

How to draw Spider-Man on his web step by step

Step 1: Mark the proportions of the superhero

Let’s start with a stick figure – a figure made of lines and circles. Using the stick figure, indicate the position of the character, the proportions of his body, and his placement on the paper. Note the unusual angle and position – because of these factors, the Spider-Man stick figure may seem disproportionate. As in other tutorials, begin by drawing the head. As you can see, the head is drawn in the shape of an oval. Then draw the lines of the spine and shoulders. Using the same principle, sketch out the arms and legs.

Step 2: Sketch in the torso and facial guidelines

Start outlining the contours of Spider-Man, adding volume to the “skeleton.” But first, draw the facial guidelines and lightly mark the eyes. Then draw the outlines of the torso using smooth shapes. Here you can already convey the tilt of the torso and emphasize the V-shaped form of the body.

Step 3: Draw the arms of Spider-Man

Next, add mass and shape to the arms. First, mark the shoulders and elbows as circles. Draw the upper arms and forearms in the shape of cylinders. Then draw a square palm and the fingers as oblong rectangles. Pay particular attention to the contours of the muscles.

Step 4: Draw the legs of Spider-Man

Using the same approach, add the outlines of the upper and lower legs, depicting them as elongated, modified cylinders. In the lower part, indicate the feet with light lines. Pay attention to the slight contrapposto and the positioning of the arms and legs. This is what creates the sense that the hero is standing on the surface with three limbs.

Step 5: Trace the superhero’s head and eyes

Now draw Spider-Man’s head in detail using darker, more defined lines. At this stage, you can also indicate the jawline, cheekbones, or the outline of the nose beneath the mask for a more detailed look. Then, using the previously marked guidelines, carefully draw the eyes, conveying their characteristic tilt. Make sure the eyes and the outline of the head remain symmetrical.

Step 6: Detail the torso of the comic character

Erase the guidelines from the torso, then trace its contours, making them smooth and clean. In addition to the outer contours, indicate the outlines of the prominent pectoral muscles and lightly suggest the clavicles. At this stage, sketch the lines of the costume, specifically the boundaries between the red and blue areas. In the following steps, you will draw the web pattern within these sections.

Step 7: Refine the hero’s arms and hands

Erase the unnecessary guidelines from Spider-Man’s arms, then trace the contours and give the arms a correct anatomical form. Draw the fingers and indicate the phalanges. Don’t forget to mark the boundaries between the blue and red areas, which begin in the middle of the forearm and, running along the arm, connect with the boundary on the torso.

Step 8: Detail the legs and shoes

As in the previous stages, erase the guidelines and trace the contours. In addition to the outer contours of the legs, mark the muscle lines on the thighs and shins. Pay special attention to the knees – there are many lines where it is easy to get confused. As a final touch in this step, draw the lines of Spider-Man’s shoes.

Step 9: Start drawing the web pattern

In the previous steps, you drew the boundaries of the red and blue areas on the suit. In this step, draw vertical lines inside the red areas of Spider-Man suit. All the lines radiate from the center of the web, which is located between the eyes on the mask. In the same step, draw the web pattern on the fingers – the lines should be placed close together.

Step 10: Complete the web pattern

Add the second layer of the web, which runs horizontally. The lines of this part, like the vertical ones, originate from the central point between the eyes on the mask and spread across the red parts of the costume. Note that each line has a slight curvature. Also draw the Spider-Man logo in the center of the chest.

Step 11: Indicate the shadow areas

Indicate the outlines of the shadows on the superhero’s suit with light lines. First, draw the cast shadow from the head onto the chest – this is the only large shadow area on the red part of the costume. The remaining shadow masses are located on the blue areas. Depict these shadows taking into account the contours of the muscles and the volume of the body parts.

Step 12: Fill in and finalize the comic-style shadows

Shadows in this tutorial are rendered in a comic style – they are high-contrast and appear as solid black shapes. Now fill in the shadow areas using very dense, solid black. To convey halftones and tonal transitions, use dark hatching that follows the form and volume.

Step 13: Draw the web behind Spider-Man

Now the most important step of this lesson – drawing the web behind Spider-Man. First, draw long straight lines radiating outward from behind the hero in different directions. Then add short cross lines to complete the pattern.

How to draw Spider-Man’s web

Drawing a web – whether it’s the pattern on a superhero’s costume, the web a character is standing on, or even a simple spider web in the corner of your home – is done in roughly the same way.

First, draw long radial lines that form the main framework of the structure and attach to the surface where the web is built, such as walls or tree branches.

Then draw slightly curved lines connecting these long framework lines. These shorter cross strands of the web rarely attach directly to the surface and primarily serve to catch prey.

In essence, a web consists of two elements: the radial framework lines and the cross lines that connect them. Understanding this principle allows you to draw a web for virtually any purpose.

This basic web pattern can take many different forms depending on your needs. It can be a circular web created by Spider-Man to catch a villain, strands stretched between two buildings, or a wide web shot outward.

The key is to correctly deform the overall shape according to the surface the web lies on and to take gravity into account.

All these skills in constructing a web pattern are essential when you draw Spider-Man on his web. The same principles are also useful if you want to draw Spider-Man swinging or hanging from the ceiling.
