This tutorial will show you how to draw Satoru Gojo from the anime Jujutsu Kaisen in an authentic, recognizable style.

For this character, we chose the anime character drawing method we described earlier, and we will use his canonical appearance with the black uniform and blindfold.

How to draw Satoru Gojo step by step

Step 1: Place the head and torso construction shapes

Sketch the outline of the anime character’s head near the upper part of the page, since the character is tall and slender. From it, draw a line downward for the spine, roughly equal to three head heights. At the upper part of the spine, indicate the rib cage, and at the lower part sketch the pelvis.

Place the head and torso construction shapes

Step 2: Block in Gojo arms and legs

From the upper corners of the rib cage, sketch the arms of Satoru Gojo with simple lines, connecting the segments with small circles that indicate the joints. From the sides of the pelvic oval, draw the legs in the same way, using simple lines and small circles for the joints.

Step 3: Sketch the face axes and torso

Taking the head turn into account, draw a vertical axis line dividing the face of Satoru Gojo into two parts. Then add a horizontal guideline; their intersection marks the center of the face. Add the volume of the neck as a cylinder and sketch the outline of the torso, indicating its mass and form.

Step 4: Sketch the arms of Satoru Gojo

Keeping in mind that all parts of the human body are volumetric, draw the upper and lower arms as thin elongated cylinders. Indicate the shoulders and elbows with spherical shapes. Block in the hands with rough general outlines.

Step 5: Draw the legs of Satoru Gojo

The legs of this anime character are also thin and elongated, so at this stage they appear as two stretched cylinders. Indicate the knees as spheres connecting the upper and lower legs. Sketch the feet with simple outlines without details. Check that the character stands vertically on the page before adding details.

Step 6: Outline the hair mass and collar

Indicate the general mass of the hair with light, symmetrical lines on the head. Then outline the collar, keeping in mind that it is a wide cylindrical shape surrounding the lower part of the face. In the same step, indicate the shoulders of the jacket.

Step 7: Sketch the jacket and pants

Draw the sleeves of Satoru Gojo’s jacket as if placing them over the previously sketched arm forms. In the same way, outline the part of the jacket covering the torso. In the lower section, sketch the pants, indicating folds where the fabric compresses and stretches.

Step 8: Draw the face of Satoru Gojo

Begin adding details to the initial framework, moving from top to bottom while working symmetrically. First draw the blindfold covering the eyes of Satoru Gojo. On both sides of the head, draw the anime ears symmetrically. Next, draw the nose of Satoru Gojo with a pair of clean, simple lines, and indicate the mouth with a horizontal line below. Give the jaw a more angular shape.

Step 9: Detail the anime character’s hair

Using smooth lines from roots to tips, draw the anime hair strands, keeping them roughly the same size. Despite their curved shapes, the strands should spread symmetrically outward, similar to a dandelion.

Step 10: Refine the collar and add folds

Refine the collar using the previously sketched outline, giving it clear and readable contours. Add folds while keeping in mind how thick fabric bends. Draw a seam slightly off-center on the collar.

Step 11: Refine and detail the torso

With the same clean lines, refine the jacket covering the torso. Extend the seam downward to the lower edge of the jacket. Indicate folds near the shoulders and below with short lines. In anime, folds are usually simplified rather than highly detailed.

Step 12: Complete the anime character’s arms

Refine the sleeves, also indicating folds around the shoulders and elbows. When drawing symmetrical elements such as sleeves, work alternately on both sides to maintain similar size and shape.

Step 13: Draw the hands of Gojo in detail

To draw the anime hand correctly, first outline the palm with clean lines, then the fingers. Despite the complex raised gesture, keep the basic anatomy of the hand in mind.

Step 14: Detail the pants and add folds

Draw the pants with clean, smooth lines, outlining the folds. The largest concentration of folds appears above the shoes, where the fabric gathers. Remember the principles of drawing anime clothing when rendering all elements.

Step 15: Draw the shoes of Gojo in detail

Carefully outline the shoes, using smooth lines to indicate the visible part of the sole. Work alternately on the left and right shoe, keeping in mind that one leg is slightly forward, so it should appear subtly larger due to perspective.

Step 16: Finalize the linework and add shading

Erase all construction lines that remain visible. Then refine the final lines to give the drawing of Satoru Gojo a finished appearance. Add light hatching to indicate shadows. Shade the blindfold to give it a dark tone. You can also shade the clothing, but keep the shadows darker than the base tone of the fabric.

Basic stages of drawing anime and Gojo

Drawing anime characters follows several main large stages.

First, you create the basic framework or skeleton of the character using simple lines and ovals. At this stage, your main task is to establish proportions, place the character on the page, and position them correctly within the space if you are including a background.

The next major stage is adding volume and mass using simple geometric shapes. By imagining body parts as cylinders and flattened box-like forms, you build volume onto the previously sketched framework.

After that comes the stage of blocking in details, where you indicate them with general shapes and contours.

Then all forms and details are refined with clean, final lines. The last step is erasing construction lines, checking proportions, and adding shadows.

These are the main stages of this tutorial summarized into larger blocks.

These same stages apply to drawing any anime character. You would draw Naruto in the same way, but apply different details at later stages.

The same steps are used when drawing an anime girl, with slight adjustments to the geometric construction and added details. These fundamentals are also very useful when drawing this specific character in different poses.

Keep these principles in mind, along with the fundamentals of drawing that apply to any style, and try drawing Satoru Gojo in a variety of poses and viewing angles. This is the most effective way to improve your skills and move to a more advanced level.
