How to Draw a Cartoon Doctor

This simple lesson will show you how to draw a cartoon doctor wearing a medical coat and holding a stethoscope, thermometer, and clipboard.
These details are not accidental in a cartoon drawing of a doctor, because they help the artist clearly communicate an important message to the viewer – that the character represents a specific profession.
By placing certain clothing and recognizable objects on a cartoon figure, you transform an ordinary person into a representative of a particular profession.
In this lesson, we will demonstrate how to do this, and also show how to simplify the figure correctly and use basic shapes to achieve a clear and expressive result.
How to draw cartoon doctor step by step
Step 1: Sketch the head of the doctor
As usual, start drawing the cartoon doctor with the head, sketching it as a circle near the top of the page. To simplify the placement of the facial features, draw vertical and horizontal symmetry guidelines whose intersection marks the bridge of the nose.

Step 2: Draw the torso of the cartoon doctor
Directly below the head, sketch a short, flat cylindrical shape for the neck. Then draw the outline of the cartoon doctor’s torso, which in cartoon proportions should be about the same size as the head or slightly larger.

Step 3: Outline the doctor’s arms and hands
Use a pair of cylinders to sketch the upper arms extending to the sides. Then add the lower arms and the hands. Position them in the pose you prefer. In our example, the doctor will hold a thermometer in one hand and a clipboard in the other.

Step 4: Sketch the cartoon legs and feet
Below the torso, sketch the legs placed close together and add the feet. To achieve a stronger cartoon effect, draw the feet proportionally larger than they would be on a realistic human figure.

Step 5: Draw the cartoon face of the doctor
Now begin drawing the cartoon face using the symmetry guidelines. First draw the eyes of the cartoon doctor as simple ovals with small dots inside for the pupils. Then add an exaggerated cartoon nose and a simple curved line for the mouth.

Step 6: Sketch the hair, ears, and eyebrows
Above the eyes, draw the eyebrows as two flat oval shapes. On the sides of the head, sketch the ears with simple curved lines and add the hair. At this stage you can choose any hairstyle you prefer.

Step 7: Refine the cartoon face
Darken the facial lines to give the doctor drawing a cleaner look. Draw the cartoon eyes, nose, and mouth in detail, erasing any lines that are not part of the final drawing. Fill in the pupils with black.

Step 8: Refine the head and remove guidelines
Repeat the same process for the rest of the head – outline it with darker, cleaner lines and erase the remaining construction marks. Avoid adding unnecessary details; keep the drawing simple and clear while maintaining symmetry.

Step 9: Sketch the coat and medical accessories
Now add the characteristic elements that transform an ordinary figure into a doctor. First draw the outline of the coat covering the torso of the cartoon doctor. Then sketch the stethoscope hanging around the neck with smooth lines. In one hand draw the clipboard, and in the other the thermometer.

Step 10: Refine the torso and doctor coat
Move from general shapes to details by outlining the torso and the coat. Add a tie and a belt if desired. Erase the construction lines and draw the stethoscope in detail, giving it a clearer and more accurate shape while maintaining symmetry.

Step 11: Detail the arms, thermometer, and clipboard
Next outline the sleeves and arms, carefully drawing the fingers. Then outline the clipboard and refine its shape. Draw the thermometer in more detail by adding the measurement scale and erase any remaining guidelines from the upper part of the body.

Step 12: Draw the cartoon pants and shoes of the doctor
Give the pants a cleaner, smoother shape by outlining them and removing the construction lines used earlier. Draw the shoes in detail, adding the soles and a few simple folds on the upper surfaces.

Step 13: Finalize and trace the cartoon doctor drawing
To enhance the cartoon effect, outline the entire drawing with darker, more confident lines. Remember the concept of line weight discussed in our basic drawing course – thicker lines make parts of the drawing appear closer, while thinner lines create a sense of distance.

In this cartoon doctor drawing lesson we applied the core principles used in this genre of visual art. The next important step is practice.
Knowledge becomes a lasting skill only when it is reinforced through repetition. Try drawing the cartoon doctor with different hairstyles and facial expressions, and experiment by adding or removing accessories from the example.
It is also very useful to practice drawing cartoon characters from other professions.
For instance, you can draw a cartoon builder by using the same basic figure but replacing the accessories with construction tools.
Using the same methods, you could also draw a cartoon astronaut.
By practicing regularly, changing clothing elements, experimenting with style, and varying the level of complexity, you will firmly develop these skills and apply them to many other characters.
