How to Draw a Maine Coon Cat

For those who are interested in distinctive cat breeds, we created this lesson on how to draw a Maine Coon with its characteristic facial expression and recognizable fur.
This breed of cat has a very recognizable and distinctive face that is difficult to confuse with anything else (except perhaps certain well-known actors).
Drawing a Maine Coon does not differ much from drawing any other cat if you do not go into details.
However, once you begin to study animal drawing more carefully, you will notice many nuances that distinguish drawing this breed from any other, and you will also understand how an animal can appear more or less realistic through the use of different hatching techniques and highlights.

Step 1: Sketch the cat’s body guidelines
As in many other drawing lessons, begin by using simple geometric shapes. Draw three circles to indicate the outlines of the head, neck, and torso, and add four lines to mark the limbs. Keep the lines in the first step very light so you can erase and adjust them later if necessary.

Step 2: Draw the Maine Coon‘s ears and tail
Create a base for further detailing. Draw two intersecting lines inside the contour of the face. After that, add the ears and the tail. Then use smooth lines to connect the shapes of the torso and the head. At this stage, notice the main features that distinguish a Maine Coon – its long, elongated ears and its large, fluffy tail.

Step 3: Sketch the front legs of the cat
Now use long, smooth lines to outline the front limbs with fairly massive paws. Pay attention to the contours and overall shape of the Maine Coon’s front legs, and try to convey the form as neatly as possible.

Step 4: Draw the hind legs of the Maine Coon
Now repeat the same actions with the hind limbs, carefully outlining them based on the lines from the previous steps. Keep in mind that due to linear perspective, only one hind leg is fully visible, while the other is partially hidden behind the body.

Step 5: Sketch the cat’s eyes
Now move to the upper part of the body and draw the Maine Coon’s head in detail. Start by drawing the cat eyes as two almond-shaped forms. Then add the pupils inside. Due to the peculiarities of the angle, one eye is located closer to the vertical line than the other.

Step 6: Detail the nose, mouth, and whiskers
Move slightly lower and draw the nose and mouth of the Maine coon cat. First, sketch a shape that resembles a mushroom. Then add two equal-sized arcs to represent the cheeks. At the very bottom, draw a small rounded line to indicate the mouth.

Step 7: Draw the Maine Coon’s head in detail
Now use clearer, darker lines to draw the cat’s head in more detail, outlining the fur. Start with the ears, refining them with short strokes to represent the hair and tufts. Then outline the head, giving it a fluffy and massive appearance. Add fur contours along the neck to create a more authentic look.

Step 8: Detail the cheat and front limbs
Add fur texture on the chest using short strokes to convey the characteristic look of this cat. Then carefully refine the front legs, adding short strokes for greater authenticity. Define the toes with short, smooth lines.

Step 9: Draw the hind legs of the Maine Coon
Draw the hind limbs of the Maine coon in the same way as the front ones – first trace the legs, then define the toes, carefully erasing any unnecessary lines. The Maine Coon’s tail is very fluffy, so to convey this, add short strokes along the entire outer edge of the tail, following its shape and curve.

Step 10: Check and clean up the sketch
Remove all the auxiliary lines from the previous steps and refine the final outlines of the cat. Review your drawing carefully before moving on. Pay attention to the overall shapes, proportions, and the relationship between the main volumes and the smaller details.

Step 11: Add shadows to the cat
Add light shadows to make the cat look more lively and realistic. Use a single layer of hatching or light crosshatching. Pay attention to the highlights inside the pupils, as this is an important detail. Also add additional fur texture on the lower part of the torso and along the tail.

Step 12: Deepen the shadows and midtones
Refine the shadows and add more midtones and transitions to make the Maine Coon drawing more three-dimensional. Increase the contrast in the eye area by making the highlights brighter and the shadows darker.

So, we did a hard job and got a great result! We hope that this Maine coon drawing guide was simple enough.
The main nuance in drawing a Maine Coon is, of course, its characteristic face. What distinguishes it from other cats is the relatively close placement of the eyes, the large muzzle in relation to the eyes, and the distinctive narrowed gaze.
In addition, this breed is known for its long ears with tufts and very thick fur. We included all of these features in this Maine Coon drawing lesson, and now it is time to experiment.
For example, draw a sitting cat and give it the appearance of a Maine Coon by making the fur denser and shaping the muzzle accordingly.
Or draw a cartoon cat while giving it the same key characteristics, simplifying them to a stylized form.
Now move on to useful tips. To draw at a professional level, do more than follow this guide once. Practice regularly by drawing these cats from photos and from memory.
