How to Draw Batman’s Face

One of the most striking images in comics is Batman’s mask. In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw Batman’s head in his classic cowl with pointed ears.

Batman has had many different appearances throughout the history of the comics, since different artists interpret the character in their own way.

In different versions of the comics, artists have depicted Batman’s head, as well as the character as a whole, in different ways.

His facial features, elements of the mask, and the shape of the ears may vary, but the basic sequence of steps in this tutorial can be used to draw any of these variations.

How to draw Batman’s head step by step

Step 1: Sketch Batman’s head shape

In most comics, Batman’s head has a characteristically broad jaw and a large overall shape, so we will start by blocking in these features. Sketch the overall shape of the head as a large oval. Outline the broad jaw and draw the neck below. Use very light lines at this stage.

Step 2: Add the facial guidelines

Draw a vertical centerline across Batman’s face and add a horizontal guideline through the eye area. Their intersection should be near the bridge of the nose. Mark the positions of the eyes on the horizontal line, then indicate the nose and mouth with short strokes along the vertical axis.

Step 3: Sketch Batman’s mask details

Use the guidelines from the previous step to begin adding the main facial details. Sketch the narrow eyes with lowered brows. Then outline the opening of the cowl around the lower part of the face and indicate the mouth. From this angle, Batman’s face should be symmetrical, so start paying attention to symmetry at this stage.

Step 4: Shape the jaw and cowl

Make Batman’s jaw more angular and widen it at the sides and sketch the lower lip. Then sketch the long pointed ears and the upper parts of the shoulders. You can make the ears shorter if you want to depict a version closer to some classic interpretations of Batman, such as those by Dick Sprang or Frank Miller.

Step 5: Refine Batman’s facial expression

Now begin replacing the rough sketch with darker, cleaner lines. Draw the eyes of Batman in more detail. Refine lowered eyebrows above them. Add the creases around the eyes and on the forehead, including the two lines between the eyebrows. Erase the rough guidelines from this area.

Step 6: Complete the Batman head outline

Trace the jaw, head, and pointed ears with clear, finished lines. Continue downward to outline the neck and indicate its muscles with a few simple contours. Erase the remaining construction lines and check the entire Batman head drawing. The head should look symmetrical and proportional.

Step 7: Add shadows to Batman

Determine the direction of the light before adding shadows. In this drawing, the light comes from the upper right, so the darker areas appear mainly on the opposite sides of the forms. Use hatching to shade the cowl, face, jaw, and neck. Let the strokes follow the shapes of the head and muscles so the Batman drawing appears more three-dimensional.
