How to Draw a Squash

In one of our previous tutorials, we showed how to draw a pumpkin. In this tutorial about the closest relative of the pumpkin, we will show you how to draw a squash.
This vegetable can often be found in various works of art in the still life genre, the great masters of which included artists such as Caravaggio and Paul Cézanne.
Knowing how to draw such objects correctly and give them volume will help you create convincing still lifes even if you are a beginner artist.
How to draw a squash step by step
Step 1: Sketch the squash outline
First of all, sketch the outer contours of the squash. This figure tapers slightly in the center and expands at the top and bottom. Use very light pencil lines at this stage because some of them will be erased later.

Step 2: Add the squash stem
Now add a small but very important element to the squash drawing. Sketch the cylindrical stem using the same very light lines. Squashes are all slightly different from one another, with the main differences in the outer shape of the vegetable and the stem.

Step 3: Refine the squash contours
Now make the squash drawing more realistic and complete. Trace the sketch with clear, dark lines. Make the contours more natural. Add vertical lines along the squash body and stem. Using an eraser, remove all unnecessary lines from the sketch.

Step 4: Add shadows to the vegetable
Now make the squash drawing even more natural and three-dimensional by adding shadows. Apply the hatching evenly in the shadowed areas. The hatching lines should follow the curves of the vegetable.

As we wrote in the introduction to this squash drawing tutorial, the knowledge gained here will be very useful for those who want to improve their still-life drawing skills.
Try now to draw a still life using the four steps above. You can draw a watermelon or sketch a vase next to this vegetable, then add fruit and grape leaves. This way, you can create a composition inspired by the still-life tradition mentioned earlier.
