How to Draw Squidward

Finished Squidward drawing with half-closed eyes, long nose, arms, and tentacles

In this step-by-step tutorial, we will show you how to draw Squidward, the grumpy squid from the SpongeBob SquarePants animated series.

Perhaps this character from the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants is even more colorful than its protagonist. Indeed, it is impossible not to remember this phlegmatic octopus, who periodically expresses very interesting and witty thoughts.

So, let’s begin and learn how to draw Squidward!

How to draw Squidward step by step

Step 1: Sketch Squidward’s head shape

Begin drawing Squidward with a flattened oval. The shape is similar to the one used when drawing Eric Cartman, but flatter.

Step 2: Add the face shapes

This stage may look difficult, but it is quite simple if you follow the sequence. First, draw a small trapezoidal shape below the oval, tapering slightly toward the bottom.

At the bottom of the trapezoid, draw the lower part of Squidward’s mouth as a shape resembling a sad expression, which is not surprising. Use two elongated vertical ovals to draw Squidward’s eyes.

Step 3: Build Squidward’s torso and legs

Outline the long, narrow body of Squidward. First, draw a rectangular torso and connect it to the head with a thin neck. Then draw a circle below the torso, followed by the tentacles. They resemble the shapes used when drawing a palm tree, but only schematically.

Step 4: Draw the arms and shirt of Squidward

Draw a small sleeve at the top of Squidward’s torso and add the collar around the neck. Then sketch the arms. Note how long the forearms are compared with the upper arms.

Step 5: Refine Squidward’s facial features

Draw Squidward’s face. Place the eyelid line slightly above the point where the rounded shape transitions into the angular lower face. These half-closed eyelids are often used in animation to convey a phlegmatic or skeptical expression. A similar expression appears when drawing Brian Griffin. Do not forget to add the wrinkles above Squidward’s eyes.

Step 6: Complete Squidward’s details

Finish the Squidward drawing by adding the remaining details. First, use long lines to separate the character’s tentacles. Then outline the backs of Squidward’s hands and add the dots on his forehead.
