How to Draw Iron Man Without a Helmet

This tutorial will show you how to draw Iron Man without his helmet in a highly detailed suit from modern comic books.
In one of our other tutorials, we showed how to draw Iron Man using his classic suit from the 1960s comics. In that original lesson, Tony Stark was also wearing his helmet.
Here, we want to present a slightly different version by depicting the legendary leader of the Avengers without the mask.
The tutorial is quite detailed, but we have organized it so that it remains accessible to anyone interested in drawing comics.
How to draw Iron Man without a helmet step by step
Step 1: Sketch Tony Stark’s body framework
In the first step, draw a stick figure. Use it to sketch out the general proportions and posture of the character. Look carefully at these proportions. Compare the length of the head to the overall height of the figure – the head should be about 1/7–1/7.5 of the total height. The shoulders should be significantly wider than the pelvis.

Step 2: Add volume to the upper body
Don’t forget an important point – Tony Stark is wearing a massive suit, so the contours of the body will be larger than those of an average person. The hands should be large and powerful. The torso should be wider at the top and gradually narrow toward the belt. By the way, we also have a drawing lesson about Spider-Man.

Step 3: Draw the legs of Iron Man
The lower body is a bit simpler. The inguinal area and the belt can be represented as a triangle. The hips can be indicated with cylinders, and the knees with hexagons. Don’t forget that the feet should be larger than those of a normal person because of the heavy armor.

Step 4: Draw the facial guidelines of Tony Stark
Inside the head, draw a line that will help you draw the eyes. This line should be positioned approximately in the middle. Above it, draw another line to guide the hair. Below the eye line, draw another line that will serve as a reference for the mouth.

Step 5: Sketch the eyes, nose, and mouth
Using the horizontal line, draw the eyes. Above them, indicate slightly furrowed eyebrows. A bit below the eyes, in the center of the face, draw the outline of the nose, and below that draw the mouth. Keep in mind the principles of drawing the human face even when depicting features in a comic style.

Step 6: Draw the hair and jaw of Tony Stark
In the upper part of the head, use clear lines moving from bottom to top to draw the superhero’s hair. On the side, depict the part of the suit covering the ear as a flat cylinder. Give the jaw a more angular look, keeping the anatomy of the skull in mind.

Step 7: Detail the head of the superhero
Now draw the part of the mask that covers the lower jaw using clear, straight lines. This is the part that remains on the head even when the character removes the mask in this version of the comic. Draw the mustache, add a few facial lines, and refine the features if necessary.

Step 8: Draw the neck armor of Iron Man
Using clean, symmetrical lines, draw the suit details on both sides of the neck, over the trapezius muscles. Then depict the part of the suit that covers the neck, keeping in mind that the details should follow the form they are placed on. In the center of the chest, draw the arc reactor – one of the most recognizable details of the character. This element can be made circular.

Step 9: Add the shoulder armor and chest plates
Now draw the shoulder pads – the elements of the suit that cover the upper arms. Draw them symmetrically and proportionally, keeping linear symmetry in mind and remembering that objects slightly farther from us appear a bit smaller than those closer. Then draw the plates covering Iron Man’s chest and rib area.

Step 10: Draw the arm structure of Iron Man
Divide the arm that is closer to us into clear segments – the upper arm, the lower arm, and the hand. Indicate the main parts of the armor by separating the arm into front and side planes, without going into detail yet. Clearly define the individual fingers.

Step 11: Add details to the arm armor
On the biceps area, add additional details, placing them in accordance with the form. Then detail the forearm as well, adding smaller elements and positioning them according to the plane they lie on.

Step 12: Draw the abdominal armor of Iron Man
Indicate the outlines of the armor on the abdomen that resemble the abs. Add horizontal segments that allow the torso to bend. Slightly below, draw the volumetric armor piece that covers Iron Man’s pelvic area.

Step 13: Divide the leg into main segments
Move on to the leg and, using the same approach as with the arm, divide it into clear segments – the upper leg, the lower leg, and the foot. Draw the outline of the knee and add general details to the foot.

Step 14: Detail the leg of the character
Divide the leg into clear planes – the front and the side. Draw the cross lines that separate the armor on both the upper and lower parts of the leg. On the side near the knee, depict a loop-like detail.

Step 15: Outline the far leg structure
Now do the same with the far leg – divide it into clear segments: the upper leg, the lower leg, and the foot. In the same way, add details to the foot, keeping in mind that the orientation of the two legs should differ slightly.

Step 16: Detail the armor of the far leg
Now again divide the leg into clear planes and add the armor segments. As you draw the armor elements on this leg, constantly compare it with the other one so they remain symmetrical, while the orientation of the form still differs.

Step 17: Draw the segments of the second arm
Divide the arm farther from us into segments as well. Keep in mind that this arm differs slightly in its orientation from the nearer arm and is also partially overlapped by the torso.

Step 18: Complete the far arm of the superhero
Constantly compare it with the nearer arm as you draw the details on the far arm, keeping everything symmetrical and proportional. Check your entire Iron Man drawing and erase the guidelines if necessary.

Step 19: Add shading to the Iron Man drawing
The comic style involves clear, dark shadows and transitions using strong hatching. In addition, on metallic surfaces, comic-style shadows and highlights have their own specifics – they are highly contrasting and follow the form on which they are placed.

This lesson will also be useful if you want to draw Iron Man with his helmet. You can follow the same steps, but instead of an open face, depict the outline of the characteristic helmet with openings for the eyes and mouth.
All the steps in this lesson will also be useful if you want to draw Tony Stark in his more classic suits or those used in modern Marvel films.
If you find that the character does not stand evenly, you will most likely need to study the principles of the central axis and the center of gravity in constructing the human figure.
We covered this fully in our tutorial on drawing Spider-Man standing, where we also explained how to apply this principle in practice.
