How to Draw Hulk

The world of comics is vast, and its characters are highly diverse. Continuing our more in-depth lessons in this area, in this tutorial we will show you how to draw Hulk, the green giant and one of the most recognizable members of the Avengers.

Each comic book character has clear defining traits originally established by the creators, and these remain consistent regardless of the artist.

That is why you can easily recognize Hulk by his massive physique, distinctive facial features, tousled hair, and torn clothing.

These and other smaller details will be shown in detail in this step-by-step tutorial, and we will also explain how to practice drawing this character effectively to refine your skills.

How to draw the Hulk step by step

Step 1: Sketch the character’s head and body axis

To draw Hulk accurately and without mistakes, start by establishing the body framework. First, imagine or lightly draw a vertical line that runs through the center of the character’s body. Then sketch the head as an oval and the spine as a line. At the top of the spine, indicate the shoulder girdle, and below it mark the pelvis with a pair of short horizontal lines.

Step 2: Sketch Hulk’s upper and lower limbs

From the shoulders, sketch the arms downward using simple, light lines, keeping them roughly the same in size. From the sides of the pelvis, draw the legs, making them slightly bent. In classic comics as well as modern films, Hulk is most often shown standing with slightly bent legs.

Step 3: Draws the facial guidelines and torso

Divide Bruce Banner’s face down the center with a line that follows the rounded shape of the head sketched earlier. Cross it with a horizontal line to help place the eyes. Along this guideline, indicate the position of the nose and mouth. Use broad, sweeping lines to outline the powerful body, keeping in mind that due to the strong downward tilt of the head and the massive trapezius muscles, Hulk’s neck is often barely visible.

Step 4: Sketch the comic character’s arms

In the upper part, indicate the powerful deltoid muscles, which are nearly the same size as the head. Below them, draw equally strong upper arms and forearms. Then block in the fists as two large, rough geometric shapes without going into detail yet. Try to keep the arms symmetrical.

Step 5: Draw the legs of Hulk

Next, outline the upper legs, narrowing them toward the knees. Draw the knees as two spheres. Then sketch the lower legs with prominent calf muscles. Finish blocking in the legs by drawing Hulk’s large feet. This is the basic framework, mass, and form onto which the details will be added later. Check the proportions and symmetry before moving on.

Step 6: Draw Bruce Banner‘s facial features

On the horizontal guideline, draw the eyes on both sides of the vertical line, keeping them symmetrical. Above them, indicate the heavy, lowered eyebrows. Then draw a high-set nose and a relatively low-set large mouth. This wide distance between the high-positioned nose and the large mouth is another characteristic feature of Hulk. Also outline the strong jaw and add the ear.

Step 7: Refine the facial details

Inside the eyes, draw the pupils, making sure they are directed the same way. Add clear, symmetrical folds on the face around the bridge of the nose and the nose itself. Inside the mouth, indicate the separation of the teeth with wavy lines. Then define the powerful trapezius muscles.

Step 8: Draw the hair of Hulk

Hulk’s hairstyle is another defining feature – it is messy and unkempt. Start by carefully outlining the overall shape of the hair without trying to draw every individual strand; instead, group them into larger sections. Then add texture in the same way, avoiding individual hairs and focusing on the general shapes of the larger masses within the hair.

Step 9: Refine the upper body forms

Merge and unify the geometric blocks and shapes that formed the outline of the upper body. Use smooth, flowing lines to give the muscles a more natural and lifelike appearance. Add the general contours of the chest muscles, the abs, and indicate the fingers on the hands.

Step 10: Refine the comic character’s legs

In the same way, refine the legs, turning the separate geometric blocks into a unified form. Mark the position of the knees and draw the individual toes on Hulk’s feet.

Step 11: Detail the torso muscles of Hulk

Detail the torso by first outlining the chest muscles and adding clear lines along their contours to emphasize tension. Then carefully define the abs and oblique muscles, making sure they appear balanced on both the left and right sides.

Step 12: Draw the arm muscles of Hulk

Starting from the upper part, refine the deltoid muscles. Then carefully define the shapes of the biceps, triceps, and forearms. When working on paired elements, such as the arms, always develop both sides together, comparing them to maintain consistency.

Step 13: Sketch the superhero’s ripped clothes

Torn clothing is a characteristic feature that artists almost always include when drawing Hulk. Indicate this by outlining the pants with ripped knees and torn lower edges. Add seams, pockets, and folds.

Step 14: Refine and complete the legs and feet

Next, use smoother lines to define the visible calf muscles and the toes on Hulk’s feet. Add nails and indicate the tendons visible along the top of the feet. Erase any remaining construction lines from your drawing.

Step 15: Draw comic-style shadows on Hulk

Outline the shadow areas and fill them with solid black without tonal gradation. To suggest halftones, use hatching. Fill the hair with solid black as well, leaving an uneven highlight strip. Shadows in comics are always very strong and high-contrast, so try to convey this in your drawing. You can also add a bold outline to enhance the comic-style effect.

Principles of drawing Hulk

The comic style involves a certain level of simplification, but it is still fully based on the fundamentals of art.

Volume, mass, structure, symmetry, proportions, perspective, and more are all followed by comic artists, even in a stylized form.

The same applies to Hulk. His muscles are intentionally exaggerated and his facial features are not entirely realistic, yet he remains convincing because the artist adheres to these fundamentals.

Hulk drawing variation for advanced practice

At the core of Hulk’s figure lies the principle of drawing a person, but with exaggerated forms. This is the first thing you should study if you want to draw the character more deeply.

Artistic vision is another essential skill – when drawing the character, you must always keep the volume of the body as a whole and of its individual parts in mind.

In addition, you need to be able to place the character correctly on the page. This is something we explained in detail in our detailed tutorial on drawing Spider-Man in a standing pose.

These are the minimum skills you should always keep in mind when drawing Hulk, and of course, the most important factor is consistent practice.

Hulk rarely stands still in comics, so you should aim to draw him in a wide variety of poses and variations. This is the most effective way to develop a high level of skill.
