How to Draw a Beagle

In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw a beagle, a dog with distinctive ears and a face, in a realistic style.

This tutorial continues our series of dog drawing tutorials and demonstrates an even more realistic and three-dimensional style than our main dog drawing tutorial.

Here, we use a beagle to show how to create a realistic-looking dog with detailed forms and carefully rendered shadows.

At the same time, we have tried not to make the process unnecessarily complicated.

How to draw a beagle step by step

Step 1: Sketch the beagle’s framework

Start the realistic beagle drawing with a simple framework. Use light, almost invisible lines to mark the head, chest, and pelvis. Connect these shapes with a line for the spine, then sketch the tail and legs. This initial stage follows the same basic method used in our simpler dog drawing instructions.

Step 2: Add the muzzle and ears

Using a few light lines, outline the muzzle and hanging ears. We are drawing a typical beagle, but you can change these details to give your dog a slightly different appearance.

Step 3: Outline the front legs

Outline the front legs with rough, loose lines. We will refine them later, so focus on placing them correctly and giving each leg enough volume.

Step 4: Shape the torso and tail

Use a pair of smooth lines to form the upper and lower edges of the torso. The body should taper slightly toward the abdomen. Next, lightly sketch the tail. To check the overall shape of your drawing, view it in a mirror.

Step 5: Sketch the hind legs

Sketch the beagle’s hind legs with light lines, using the same method as for the front legs. The hind legs should be noticeably thicker at the top and taper smoothly toward the middle.

Step 6: Draw the eyes and nose

Begin adding the details that make the beagle drawing more convincing. Sketch the eyes as two almond-shaped forms slightly above the center of the head. Draw the nose just below them. We explain how to draw a dog nose in more detail in a separate tutorial.

Step 7: Refine the beagle’s muzzle

Draw the mouth just below the nose. Outline the upper jaw first, then add the lower jaw. Small folds around the muzzle will make the beagle look more realistic and convincing. You can also study our tutorial on how to draw a dog face for more detail.

Step 8: Detail the front legs

Use darker lines to refine the outlines of the front legs. As you add details, consider the shapes of the muscles and bones beneath the skin. Draw the toes and short claws, then add a few folds around the neck to make the beagle look more natural.

Step 9: Refine the hind legs

Refine the hind legs with sharper, darker lines, then draw the toes and claws. You can give the beagle drawing more depth by making the closer lines darker than those farther away.

Step 10: Add the final details

Add the remaining details to the beagle. Refine the tail, darken the ears, and add any extra folds or coat markings you want to include.

Step 11: Clean up the outlines

Erase the remaining guidelines and darken the necessary outlines. View the drawing in a mirror and step back from it to spot any mistakes, then correct them before adding the shading.

Step 12: Shade the beagle drawing

Use hatching and shadows to give the beagle convincing volume. Begin with the darkest areas and gradually move toward the lighter ones. Darken the eyes while leaving small highlights inside them.

In this tutorial, we showed you how to draw a realistic beagle with very authentic-looking forms, details, and, most importantly, three-dimensional hatching.

Of course, you can also draw this dog in a simpler way by leaving out some of the details and not drawing the shadows and highlights.

Or you can take it even further and try to make the shadows more dimensional by creating a stronger value range with a greater contrast between the shadows, highlights, and midtones.
