How to Draw Darth Vader

This step-by-step tutorial show you how to draw Darth Vader – one of the most famous and charismatic villains of all time.

This tutorial is detailed, but if you pay attention to our advice, any mistakes will be easy to correct.

How to draw Darth Vader step by step

Step 1: Sketch Darth Vader’s framework

Start with a stick figure made of simple lines and circles to indicate the character’s pose and position on the paper. As in our tutorials on characters with a similar build, such as Batman, an adult male figure is usually about seven to seven and a half head lengths tall, with the legs taking up about four of those lengths.

Begin with the head, outlining it as an oval. Then use simple lines to sketch the spine, shoulders, and limbs. Mark the knee and elbow joints with short strokes.

Step 2: Add volume to the villain’s figure

Add volume to Darth Vader’s figure. Draw the neck as a short cylinder and sketch the torso as a large cylinder. Following the lines from the previous step, build each arm from two cylinders and a square shape. Draw the pelvis as a triangle, then sketch the legs with elongated cylinders. Note that much of the legs will be hidden in the finished drawing.

Each leg can be divided into three parts: the thigh, lower leg, and foot. The thighs gradually narrow toward the knees. The lower legs have a distinct curve around the calf muscles before tapering toward the feet.

Step 3: Outline the helmet and cape

Add the main details to Darth Vader’s figure. His costume has several distinctive elements, including the helmet and large cape. First, mark the face with two guidelines, one vertical and one horizontal.
Keep these lines very light and smooth so they can be erased easily later. Make sure they intersect near the center of the face.

Draw the rounded upper edge of the helmet, followed by its wide lower rim. Then sketch the cape with two smooth lines that spread outward toward the bottom.

Step 4: Construct Darth Vader’s mask

Darth Vader’s costume design for the first film was influenced by samurai armor. You can see similar structural elements when drawing a samurai.

Just below the horizontal eye guideline, draw two long, flattened eye sockets. Under each socket, add a curved line. At the bottom of the face oval, draw an equilateral triangle and connect it to the eye sockets with straight lines. Similar masks also appear on Sith characters from the game “Star Wars: The Old Republic.”

Step 5: Refine the helmet details

Erase the unnecessary guidelines from Darth Vader’s mask. Draw the heavy brow ridges on the helmet and add the triangular detail in the lower part of the mouth area. Carefully reproduce the remaining mask details.

Step 6: Draw the flowing cape of Darth Vader

Continue detailing Darth Vader from the head downward. Draw the cape and add long vertical folds to make the fabric look more natural. The folds begin at the shoulders, spread outward, and become more frequent toward the lower edge.

Step 7: Detail the torso armor of the villain

Outline the fabric folds across Darth Vader’s torso and draw the chest panel. His suit is not only armor but also a complex system of medical devices that supports his breathing and other vital functions. A similar idea appears in Iron Man’s suit, which includes a complex chest mechanism. You can examine this structure while drawing Iron Man.

Step 8: Draw Darth Vader’s belt and hands

Draw the control panel on the torso and the large plate beneath it. Below the plate, sketch the belt with its massive buckle. Add the folds formed where the fabric is tightly gathered by the belt.

Next, draw the armor covering the groin, which resembles protective athletic equipment. Refine the visible parts of the arms, then use the earlier guidelines for drawing the hands, including the knuckles and finger joints.

Step 9: Finish drawing the legs and boots

Draw Darth Vader’s legs and refine the smooth contours of his boots. Use very light, long vertical lines and short horizontal strokes to indicate the texture of the pants. Add several folds to the pants and boots.
