How to Draw an Anime Girl

Completed anime girl drawing in a school uniform with light shading.

This tutorial will show you that learning how to draw an anime girl is not difficult if you follow a clear sequence of steps.

First, we’ll show you how to construct the figure using simple basic forms, then add volume, clothing, and the simplified shadows typical of the anime style.

How to draw an anime girl step by step

Step 1: Sketch the basic pose

First, we need to think about the character we are drawing. This is a thin teenage girl from high school. After that, we can reflect these features in the stick figure. The special features of our character are a rather large head, a static pose, and a wide pelvis combined with narrow shoulders.

Step 2: Build the torso volume

Outline the lower border of the eyes using a horizontal line. Please note that this line is much lower than the center of the head. Also, do not forget about the vertical line that divides the head into two equal parts. Next, work a little with the body. Connect the chest and pelvis with a pair of smooth, elegant lines. After that, connect the head and body with a narrow neck cylinder.

Step 3: Add volume to the limbs

There is something missing from the full silhouette, right? These are the limbs of our character. Let’s outline graceful arms and rounded legs. Use truncated cylinders that narrow smoothly toward the hands and feet. The feet and hands look like small angular shapes.

Step 4: Outline the face and hair

Now add a few details to the anime girl. Outline the large contours of the anime eyes and the hairstyle. Use rough, pointed lines for the hair. Remember to use the guidelines from the second step.

Step 5: Sketch the girl’s clothes

It’s time to start sketching the anime clothes. You can choose any clothes for your anime character. If you want to create a similar look, outline a small dress, long sleeves, and an angular collar with a bow. Do not forget to outline the stockings and small cuffs at the ends of the sleeves.

Step 6: Refine the anime face

Once the silhouette is complete, we can begin working on the final details from head to foot. Start by drawing the final details of the face. First, draw the anime girl’s eyes in detail, outlining the eyelashes and irises. Then outline the nose and mouth. Trace the outlines of the hair and erase the guidelines from the head.

Step 7: Refine the school uniform

Now we can refine the body of the anime girl. Use your imagination to create any clothes you like. We decided to draw a school uniform with a beautiful collar and a long bow. Do not forget small details such as the collarbone lines and folds in the fabric.

Step 8: Draw the anime hands

Now detail the hands of our heroine. Since we are drawing a schoolgirl, make the hands fairly small. Pay attention to the finger sizes. The thumbs should be pressed against the index fingers. Do not forget to read our special guide on drawing anime hands. It will make this difficult step much easier.

Step 9: Finish the lower body

Repeat the process from the previous step with the pelvic region and lower limbs. Draw the final version of the clothes – in our case, a skirt, high stockings, and shoes. Do not forget important details such as vertical pleats on the skirt and buckles on the front of the shoes. Erase the remaining guidelines.

Step 10: Add light anime-style shadows

Add some shadows. Light shadows are a great way to give your drawing a more finished look. To draw a shadow, use light single-layer hatching. You can first outline the boundaries of the shaded area and then cover it with hatching.
