How to Draw Nightcrawler

For this step-by-step tutorial on how to draw Nightcrawler, we chose a pose that is as characteristic and recognizable as possible for this comic character.

In many classic comics and modern films, the character is often shown in this crawling pose, reinforcing and justifying his name.

In this tutorial, we have also chosen his classic costume, in which he appeared in early comic issues.

However, all of these steps can equally be applied to drawing more modern versions of the superhero, such as those seen in recent comics or films.

How to draw Nightcrawler step by step

Step 1: Sketch the X-Men character body guidelines

Start by indicating the pose and placement of the character on the page. Sketch the head as an oval and the spine as a simple, slightly curved line. Then mark the shoulder and pelvis axes, giving them a slight tilt. Lightly sketch the arms and legs, placing Nightcrawler in a characteristic pose.

Step 2: Sketch the face axis and torso

Draw a vertical line through the center of the face as the axis of symmetry. Then add a horizontal line crossing it, dividing the head into roughly four equal parts. Slightly above, mark the hairline; between the eye line and the chin, indicate the nose with a short line, and below that place the mouth. Outline the torso, giving it a sense of mass.

Step 3: Sketch the limbs and tail

Indicate the shoulders as spheres and sketch the arms. Then block in the hands with the thumbs and two visible fingers on each hand from this angle. With very light, rough lines, suggest the mass of the lower body without details for now. Indicate the curve of the tail with a smooth line.

Step 4: Sketch the lower body of the superhero

Now give the legs a more defined structure by indicating their main parts. Sketch large feet with two toes on each. Step back slightly to check whether the pose looks convincing.

Step 5: Draw the face of Nightcrawler

Using the horizontal guideline, draw the eyes and slightly furrowed brows above them. Then, along the center line, draw the nose and, below it, the mouth. Smoothly outline the jaw, giving it a slightly angular shape. Add the general outline of the hairstyle, focusing only on the overall mass without details.

Step 6: Refine the facial expression

Add a crease on the bridge of the nose to show tension in the expression. Then draw lines radiating from this point slightly above the eyes. Also add folds around the nasolabial area and indicate the cheekbones.

Step 7: Draw the hair and ears of Nightcrawler

Refine the hair, drawing it in larger locks and strands rather than individual hairs. Draw the pointed ears of Nightcrawler with their characteristic shape. Indicate the neck muscles below the head.

Step 8: Refine the near arm of Nightcrawler

Using the previously sketched guidelines for the nearer arm, draw it in detail, defining the muscles of Nightcrawler without making them overly exaggerated. Draw the fingers spread widely apart – they should be noticeably larger than those of a normal human.

Step 9: Add details to the arm and hand

Outline the long glove and add folds around the wrist. Then lightly indicate the muscles for additional detail. Erase any remaining construction lines on this arm.

Step 10: Draw the character’s torso details

Outline the torso with darker, cleaner lines, but keep it slightly lighter than the front arm. Add the contours of the chest muscles, folds, and the costume pattern. On one side of the chest, draw the visible part of the X-Men logo.

Step 11: Refine the far arm of the superhero

Refine the far arm with smoother, cleaner lines, carefully drawing the fingers – remember that this hand has three fingers. Due to perspective, this arm should appear slightly smaller than the one closer to the viewer.

Step 12: Add details to the second arm

Using the earlier sketch as a guide, define the rest of the glove, keeping the lines consistent with the form of the arm. Add folds and erase any remaining construction lines on the upper body.

Step 13: Refine the legs of Nightcrawler

Now draw the legs of Nightcrawler with smooth, clean lines, gradually removing unnecessary sketch lines. Keep them proportional and symmetrical, though not perfectly identical in position to maintain a natural look. Carefully draw the feet and toes.

Step 14: Draw the boots and tail of Nightcrawler

Draw the outlines of the high boots and add indications of muscles and joints without overdoing the detail. Give the tail thickness and draw the arrow-shaped tip.

Step 15: Shade the superhero with strong contrast

In comics, Nightcrawler is often depicted in strong shadow, so try to convey this effect. First outline the shadow areas, following the contours of the body parts they fall on. Then fill them with solid black. To indicate halftones, such as on the arms and legs, use dark, clean hatching.

The foundation is his body and overall figure: slightly messy hair, pointed ears, three-fingered hands, two-toed feet, and a long, twisting tail with a sharp, arrow-shaped tip.

These elements are essential to include in the drawing for recognizability, while other details can vary more freely.

Most classic and modern versions of the character feature a fairly tight-fitting suit, often with a torso element resembling a vest, similar to that of traditional ninja attire.

The exact forms and nuances may differ, but the overall look remains consistent.

In the early 2000s X-Men films, however, the character appeared in a long black coat – an element of costume that was quite common for many characters at the time, such as figures from The Matrix or Doctor Otto Octavius in Sam Raimi’s films.

Even in this version, the core features of the character remain unchanged and must be preserved to maintain a recognizable appearance.
