How to Draw a Poodle

This animal drawing tutorial will show you how to draw a poodle with its characteristic curly coat and distinctive grooming style.

This guide will be largely based on our previous dog drawing tutorial, but here we will incorporate the specific features and details that make a poodle recognizable and authentic.

The main distinguishing features of a poodle are its characteristic muzzle and its slender, elongated body and limbs combined with the breed’s well-known rounded grooming style.

These are the features we will focus on and recreate throughout the steps of this lesson.

How to draw a poodle step by step

Step 1: Sketch the dog’s basic framework

To draw a poodle, you should first sketch the framework, or skeleton, of the animal. Begin by determining the approximate placement of the dog on the sheet of paper and lightly sketch the head and the line of the spine. Then indicate the rib cage and pelvis using light circles.

Step 2: Sketch facial guidelines and limbs

To correctly draw a dog’s face, you should first sketch the guidelines for its features and details. Begin by drawing a vertical line running through the center of the head. Then draw a horizontal line for the eyes. The point where these lines intersect roughly marks the bridge of the dog’s nose. After that, use light lines to indicate the front and hind legs.

Step 3: Draw the poodle hair and ears

Using the head guidelines as a reference, draw the poodle’s muzzle with simple rough lines. Slightly above it, sketch the characteristic hairstyle as a large cloud-like shape using light, general lines. On the sides, indicate the large ears hanging down toward the chest area.

Step 4: Outline the dog’s torso and tail

Add volume to the dog’s torso by connecting the rib cage and pelvis. The torso should gradually narrow in the waist area of the poodle. Then sketch the tail using a rounded, pom-pom-like shape similar to the hairstyle indicated earlier.

Step 5: Draw the front legs of the poodle

Move on to building the volume of the limbs, starting with the front legs. Indicate the contours of the legs and paws, trying to keep them symmetrical. In the lower part, draw the outlines of the thick fur, giving the legs the characteristic shape of a poodle.

Step 6: Outline the dog’s rear leg structure

In much the same way, draw the contours of the hind legs, the groomed fur around the lower sections, and the paws. The hind legs should appear slightly more bent than the front legs. Make sure the legs are positioned correctly beneath the body.

Step 7: Draw the facial features of the poodle

Using the guidelines sketched earlier, begin drawing the details, working from the head downward. Draw the eyes of the poodle along the horizontal guideline. Then draw the nose at the front of the muzzle and the mouth slightly below it. Try to maintain the correct perspective.

Step 8: Complete the dog’s head texture

Using short strokes that move from the roots toward the tips of the hair, draw the texture of the fur, refining the outline of the poodle’s fluffy hairstyle. Then use light wavy lines to trace the ears, giving them a more textured appearance.

Step 9: Draw the poodle torso in detailed

In the same way, use light flowing lines to trace the fur on the chest and tail. Draw the back and belly of the poodle with smooth uninterrupted lines to represent the skin beneath the coat and distinguish these areas from the textured fur.

Step 10: Detail the dog’s front legs

Step 12: Refine the poodle’s hind legs

The hind legs are finished in the same manner as the front legs. Areas with visible skin should be drawn using smooth contours, while the furry sections should use broken and flowing lines. Make sure all four legs appear proportional to one another.

Step 14: Complete the dog linework

To give the poodle drawing a cleaner appearance, carefully erase the construction lines sketched earlier. Add a bit of texture to the fur, concentrating mainly on the outer edges of the coat.

Step 15: Draw shadows on the poodle
