How to Draw a GT Car

The steps in this lesson will show you how to draw a GT car in a two-door coupe body, using the Mercedes-AMG GT as an example.
In our lesson on how to draw a Mercedes-AMG GT, we focused more on the specific features of Mercedes and viewed the car through the lens of the brand.
Here, however, we want to concentrate more on the coupe body and on how to convey the characteristic features of this type on paper.
Here we will show you how to depict the characteristic outlines of a body with a sloping roof and powerful wheels.
We will explain how to apply these skills when drawing various other cars and suggest exercises to help reinforce and further develop the skills you have learned.
How to draw a GT car step by step
Step 1: Sketch the basic outline of the GT car
All cars are generally drawn in a similar way, and the first step traditionally focuses on outlining the main features of the vehicle’s body (a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT in our example). With light and smooth movements, outline the contours of the body. In the initial step, it is important to mark the long hood and the relatively short cabin.

Step 2: Sketch the headlights, windows, and wheels
At the front, depict the long and aggressive headlights and the outline of the grille between them. Next, move to the middle part of the car and sketch the outlines of the front and side windows. Using two smooth and symmetrical ovals, draw the wheels of the GT car.

Step 3: Add the wheel arches, air intakes, and door
The car drawing looks a bit flat, so we need to give it more volume. To do this, sketch the outlines of the wheel arches and add a few additional lines to the wheels to make them appear more three-dimensional. Next, depict the air intakes at the front of the car, and sketch the rear-view mirror and the door. In GT cars, you can often see very wide wheel profiles, so try to convey this in your drawing.

Step 4: Draw the front of the GT car in detail
In the previous three stages, we outlined a rough base sketch of the car, which now needs to be refined. To avoid errors, start this process from the front of the car. Using clear pencil lines, trace the outline of the hood and the bumper. Then depict the headlights and the grille, placing the car logo in the center. Cars with a GT body style have a very powerful front end, but it should still remain in proper proportion with the rest of the car.

Step 5: Complete the roof and windows
Smoothly draw the roof of the car and all the windows, including the windshield and the side window. Carefully detail the side mirror and add a thin separation line between the windows. The vast majority of GT cars have two doors and side windows, which occupy most of the space on the side surface of the vehicle.

Step 6: Draw the door and air intake of the GT car
Considering that these cars have one door and one side window, draw this door and give it a large, solid appearance. Slightly below the window, at the rear corner of the door, draw the door handle. Between the door and the wheel arch, on the front fender, draw an air intake. Remove unnecessary guidelines from the GT car body.

Step 7: Refine the wheels and tires
Now draw the outlines of the rims, keeping the rules of linear perspective in mind and remembering that the front wheel should be slightly larger than the rear one. Following the same principle, outline the tires and make sure that the entire car is shown with proper perspective compression. In other words, it is important that the parts of the car in the drawing decrease in size in a convincing and consistent way as they move farther away.

Step 8: Draw the rims of the GT car
Now follow the classic approach to drawing rims, as we usually do. First depict the central point, namely the hub, keeping in mind that from this perspective it appears as an oval. Then outline the rims with larger oval shapes. After that, draw the spokes from this central hub to the outer rim contours, spacing them evenly as they radiate outward.

Step 9: Shade the GT car body and wheels
Perspective and correctly depicted form already give the car a sufficient sense of volume, but shadows and highlights will make it appear even more three-dimensional. Therefore, using basic hatching, darken the areas of your GT car drawing that are hidden from the sunlight. Also add a few highlights to the headlights and windows to create additional volume.

A GT-style car overlaps in many ways with various other types of vehicles and shares many common features with them.
Many sports and luxury car manufacturers have cars with this type of body in their lineup. In addition, the external features of such cars often intersect with those of different variations of sports cars.
For example, in our Lamborghini drawing tutorial you can find many characteristics that are typical of GT cars, but this does not mean that most sports versions of Lamborghini are GT cars.
You can observe the same situation in our Ferrari drawing tutorial.
Using this GT car drawing lesson, along with the knowledge from our other car drawing lessons, you can easily combine different approaches and draw various body style variations. The most important thing is to learn how to correctly create the volume and form of a car on paper.
We explain this in our main car drawing lesson, as well as in our tutorial on drawing a car in perspective, where we focus more deeply on creating volume and form and giving the vehicle a three-dimensional appearance.
