Linear Perspective

Linear perspective is a system that helps us depict three-dimensional objects on a flat surface according to the apparent changes in their size and shape as their distance from the viewer changes.
The systematic development of linear perspective is closely associated with the Renaissance and the growing interest in realistic representation. This system of transferring three-dimensional objects onto a two-dimensional plane while preserving a convincing sense of volume greatly simplified many of the tasks facing artists.

Theoretical knowledge of perspective is extremely important for artists because it helps depicted objects appear three-dimensional and convincing. But after studying this area of drawing, you should gradually make the construction of volumetric objects more intuitive through practice. Without understanding the basics of perspective, it is difficult to construct objects convincingly in space.
To avoid mistakes in perspective, we need to understand how we perceive objects in three-dimensional space.
The first thing you need to know is that the apparent size and shape of objects change depending on their position relative to the viewer. As objects get closer to us, they appear larger, and as they move farther away, they appear smaller.
For example, railway tracks seem to become closer together as they recede until they appear to meet at a point on the horizon. The poles located next to the railway also appear smaller and smaller until they disappear from sight.
But we know that the rails are parallel and do not actually converge.

Similar visual changes can be observed in objects all around us. Try to see them with your own eyes. Pick up a pencil, book, or any other object and turn it in your hands. Bring the object closer to and farther from your eyes. With these simple movements, you can clearly observe how its apparent size and shape change with distance and angle.
When studying the laws of perspective, we encounter such terms as the horizon line, vanishing point, and picture plane.
Sets of parallel horizontal lines that recede from the viewer appear to converge toward vanishing points on the horizon line. Parallel lines that remain parallel to the picture plane do not converge to a finite vanishing point in the drawing.

When observing an object, its appearance and perspective distortion largely depend on the chosen point of view, whether we look from above, below, left, right, or another position. The height of the viewer’s eye level also plays an important role and determines the position of the horizon.
The horizon line corresponds to the viewer’s eye level. If the viewer sits lower or rises higher, the horizon changes accordingly. Tilting the head or changing the direction of view can change where the horizon appears within the picture, but its position is still determined by the viewer’s eye level and orientation.
From this, it follows that when drawing, the location of the horizon line should be determined by the position and eye level of the viewer.
The horizon line plays a major role in perspective construction. To create a correct perspective drawing, the artist should establish the horizon line and determine the appropriate vanishing point or points.
So, let’s say we want to draw a volumetric cube. First, draw a horizon line and place the necessary vanishing points on it. Then draw straight construction lines toward these points, as shown in the illustration. After that, establish the edges of the cube and add shadows. If everything is constructed correctly, the cube will appear convincingly three-dimensional.

By observing this cube, we can clearly see how its sides change in apparent direction and size according to perspective.
Keep in mind that the number and position of vanishing points, as well as the location of the horizon line, depend on the object, its orientation, and the chosen point of view. It doesn’t matter whether you draw a simple three-dimensional cube, a house, or an entire city. The basic principles of perspective remain the same.
In the illustration below, you can see a house observed from different eye levels. Notice how its appearance changes depending on its position in relation to the horizon line.

The same rules of perspective apply to interiors. When looking toward one wall of a room in one-point perspective, lines such as the edges where the walls meet the floor and ceiling recede toward a common vanishing point on the horizon line.

When depicting an interior, the horizon line should correspond to the eye level of the viewer. A seated viewer will therefore have a lower horizon than a standing viewer.
To determine the angles of receding edges, you can use a traditional measuring technique familiar to generations of artists. Hold a pencil horizontally at arm’s length and keep it perpendicular to your line of sight. Compare the pencil with the edge of the object to estimate how strongly that edge slopes upward or downward.

And of course, remember that understanding perspective becomes much easier with regular practice. The more often you sketch objects, interiors, streets, and simple geometric forms from observation, the more naturally you will begin to recognize perspective relationships. You do not need to draw all day; even regular short practice sessions can help develop this skill.
