How to Draw Luffy

This step-by-step anime tutorial will show you how to draw Luffy in his signature outfit while using the recognizable art style.
Every anime has its own distinctive and recognizable visual style, even though the entire genre is built on a shared stylistic foundation that comes from the basics of drawing.
To draw a character from any title correctly, you need not only to capture their specific features but also to try to reproduce the particular art style used in that anime.
In this tutorial, we will show you how to do all of this step by step.
How to draw Luffy step by step
Step 1: Outline the pirate’s constitution lines
First, as always, sketch the basic framework of the character by drawing the head as an oval, or an upside-down egg shape, along with the rib cage and pelvis. Use long, flowing lines to indicate the position of the spine. The placement of these three rounded forms will determine the character’s overall pose.

Step 2: Sketch the limbs of Luffy
Lightly draw a horizontal line to establish the shoulder line. From it, sketch the arms, immediately defining their pose. Then add the legs using simple guide lines. The upper and lower sections of the legs should be approximately the same length. Mark the joints with small circles.

Step 3: Sketch the torso and facial guidelines
Draw a light vertical guideline through the exact center of the head of Luffy to divide it into two equal halves. Slightly below the midpoint, add the eye line. Notice that the low eye line not only creates the typical anime facial proportions but also conveys the downward tilt of the head. Then sketch the neck as a cylinder and add basic mass to the torso by connecting the rib cage and pelvis.

Step 4: Build Luffy’s upper body volume
Now begin adding volume to the arms, starting with the shoulders. Represent each shoulder as a lightly sketched sphere. Then draw the upper and lower arms of Luffy as cylinders, using slightly smaller spheres for the elbows. Block in the hands as simple masses without dividing them into individual fingers yet.

Step 5: Add volume to the anime pirate’s legs
Move to the lower body and build the legs using cylindrical forms similar to those used for the arms. The legs should taper slightly at the knees and ankles. Then indicate the knees and feet. Before moving on to the details, take a moment to check the overall proportions of the character.

Step 6: Sketch the clothes and facial features
Using the head guidelines, sketch the eyes and mouth. There is no need to add details yet. Continue developing the general shapes. On the head, draw the wide oval brim of the hat, followed by the top portion with a gently curved shape. Then move to the torso and block in the upper clothing.

Step 7: Draw the sash and shorts of Luffy
Draw the sash wrapped around the waist of Luffy with its long ends hanging down from one side. Then sketch the shorts, making them end just above the knees. Keep the shorts cylindrical in form, remembering the basic construction of this geometric shape as you draw them.

Step 8: Refine Luffy’s facial features
Using the construction lines as a guide, begin refining the anime character. Start with the head by drawing the anime-style eyes using darker, final lines and giving them a rounded appearance. Add the angled eyebrows and pupils. Mark the nose with a small dot, then draw Luffy’s wide smile.

Step 9: Draw the hat of Luffy in detail
Refine the outline of the hat brim, keeping its overall shape convincing without trying to make every edge perfectly smooth. Then outline the crown of the hat and draw the band that wraps around it.

Step 10: Detail the anime hair and chin
Use clean, confident lines to draw the anime hairstyle extending from beneath the hat. The hair should be divided into strands of varying thickness that flow naturally in different directions. Then refine the jawline and give it a cleaner shape with a subtle angle at the center.

Step 11: Draw the neck and scar of Luffy
Refine the neck by giving it cleaner contours and connecting it naturally to the torso. Draw the subtle collarbones and the outlines of the chest muscles of Luffy. Then add the X-shaped scar on the chest, one of Luffy’s most recognizable features.

Step 12: Refine the character’s shirt
Luffy’s clothing is another very important part of his look. As you refine the outlines, use flowing lines and folds to make the fabric look realistic and natural. Draw the round buttons on one side of the shirt and the buttonholes on the other.

Step 13: Complete the anime pirate’s hands
First refine the forearms, then move on to the hands. Draw the visible parts of the palms of Luffy before separating the fingers. When drawing anime hands, avoid adding excessive detail such as fingernails or numerous skin folds, especially when the character is shown from a distance.

Step 14: Draw folds on the sash of Luffy
Next, refine the sash and complete the outer shape of the fabric. Draw the knot on the sash of Luffy and add folds that run parallel to the length of the cloth. Keep both the shape of the sash and the folds slightly asymmetrical so this part of the drawing looks more natural.

Step 15: Complete the anime pirate’s shorts
Darken the outlines of the shorts and add the folds and seams. Along the bottom edge, create the fuzzy trim using short, wavy strokes with varying pressure. Make sure both legs of the shorts remain visually symmetrical and proportional.

Step 16: Draw the legs of Luffy in detail
Complete the legs by refining their outlines, making both legs similar in thickness and shape. Then draw the feet, indicating the toes with simple contours. Again, avoid adding unnecessary details such as toenails or small skin folds. Finish by drawing the flip-flops, including the soles and the straps.

Step 17: Draw anime shadows on Luffy
Shadows in anime are usually simplified and contain very few gradual transitions. Because of this, you can divide the drawing into areas of light and shadow, then fill the shadowed regions with light hatching. Also apply an even layer of shading to the character’s hair.

Step 18: Complete the anime pirate drawing
This final step is just as important as the previous one because it is your opportunity to review the entire Luffy drawing. Check the proportions of every part of the body and make sure the shadows have consistent tonal values. Correct any mistakes you notice, and adjust the shading wherever necessary to improve the final result.

Advanced One Piece Drawing Practice
Luffy has a very distinctive and recognizable appearance, which is exactly what artists typically aim to achieve when designing anime characters.
Another defining feature of Luffy, as well as many other heroes and villains from this series and anime in general, is their dynamic movement and poses.
Now that you have learned how to draw Luffy with this step-by-step tutorial, try drawing him in motion. For example, you could place him in a fighting stance or show him performing one of his attacks.
To do this, study reference images online or capture a frame directly from the anime. Pay close attention to how the clothing moves and how the artists convey motion.
Then apply the fundamental principles from this lesson to recreate the pose.
