How to Draw a Cartoon Wizard

In this simple step-by-step tutorial, our team will show you how to draw a cartoon wizard wearing a hat and cloak.

How to draw a cartoon wizard step by step

Step 1: Draw the eyes and pupils

Begin with two egg-shaped ovals. Add dots inside the ovals to represent the pupils. If the ovals are not smooth enough, erase them and try again. Note that cartoon characters usually have exaggerated proportions and facial features rather than realistic ones.

Step 2: Add the cartoon eyebrows and nose

Sketch triangular eyebrows above the ovals from the previous step. Add another oval positioned horizontally to form the nose. Similar noses appear on many cartoon characters.

Step 3: Draw the long wizard beard

Step 4: Draw the cartoon mouth and tongue

Form the mouth with several curved lines, then add the tongue. The cartoon wizard’s face is now complete. You can use the same facial construction for other cartoon wizards.

Step 5: Draw the wizard hat and ear

Use two angular lines to form the pointed hat. Add the hairline at the temple with a couple of short strokes. Sketch the ear as a rough circle and include the inner ear lines. The wizard’s head is now complete. You can also give him a wide-brimmed hat like the one Gandalf wears in The Lord of the Rings.

Step 6: Draw the arms and wizard staff

Use long, curved lines to shape the wizard’s arms. Add vertical lines to define the sleeves, then outline the fingers. Do not forget the magical staff, which can have any shape.

Step 7: Finish the cloak and shoes

Finish by drawing the cloak of the wizard. Similar garments are worn by famous wizards such as Merlin and Dumbledore. Add the long, curved shoes that are characteristic of classic wizards.
