How to Draw a Cauliflower

Cauliflower can often be seen in still-life compositions together with other vegetables and various household objects. In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw a cauliflower step by step.

The overall mass of this vegetable is quite simple. The main difficulty is dividing this large form into smaller uneven clusters and correctly conveying the characteristic texture of the cauliflower.

In fact, a cauliflower is one large general mass divided into many smaller clusters of irregular shapes. We used a similar principle in our tree drawing tutorial. Here we will show you how to apply this approach correctly and achieve a convincing result.

How to draw a cauliflower step by step

Step 1: Sketch the overall cauliflower form

First, sketch the overall form of the cauliflower as a simple, slightly uneven circle. The vegetable should look as one large mass without separating it into smaller parts. Use very light pencil lines so that you can correct the contour and refine the construction later.

Step 2: Draw the cauliflower leaves

Now outline the leaves around the lower part of the cauliflower. They should taper toward the tips and have uneven contours. They should look as separate forms attached to the main mass of the vegetable. Use the same light construction lines as in the previous step.

Step 3: Divide the cauliflower into clusters

Now begin dividing the large form of the cauliflower into smaller uneven clusters. Use wavy and winding lines to separate these masses and indicate the different planes of the surface. Do not make the clusters identical in shape or size, and continue using very light lines at this stage.

Step 4: Refine the cauliflower forms

Using clearer and darker lines, carefully trace the cauliflower and refine its forms. Pay attention to the contours of the individual clusters and the planes they create across the surface. Then refine the leaves and erase all remaining unnecessary construction lines.

Step 5: Add shadows with hatching

Finally, add shadows to make the cauliflower drawing more three-dimensional. Apply simple hatching to the spaces between the clusters and to the shadowed planes of the leaves. Make the deepest areas between the clusters slightly darker, and leave some lighter areas inside the shadows to represent reflected light.

You can also color the cauliflower drawing or use it as part of a larger still life. For example, draw several vegetables together and draw a jug next to them.

Try changing the size, shape, and arrangement of the clusters when drawing another cauliflower. They do not need to repeat our example exactly.
