How to Draw Omega Red

Omega Red is one of the most brutal characters from the Wolverine comics, which, as you know, are generally known for characters like this. This tutorial will show you how to draw Omega Red in his classic comic-book costume, with the tentacles extending from his arms.
Here, we will use a classic comic-book style and the basic principles of drawing a traditional superhero.
How to draw Omega Red step by step
Step 1: Sketch Omega Red’s basic figure
Start with a simple oval for Omega Red’s head. Next, sketch the line of the spine and mark the chest and pelvis along it. Place the head low between the shoulders. Use simple lines to outline the arms and legs. Sketch the leg on the left bent at the knee and the other extending farther downward.

Step 2: Add volume to the figure
Now add volume to Omega Red’s basic figure. First, sketch two intersecting guidelines on the head to mark the placement of the facial features. Then outline the torso. Draw the shoulders as large spherical forms and narrow the waist above the pelvis. Use simple geometric shapes to sketch the arms and legs. Outline thick thighs and calves that taper toward the ankles, then mark the hands and feet.

Step 3: Outline the costume and tentacles
With the basic figure in place, add Omega Red’s main details. Start with the head and sketch the facial features and hair. Mark the headband and high ponytail. Then move down to the torso and outline the villain’s costume. Add the raised shoulder pads, flared wrist guards, and pointed boot tops. Sketch the long tentacles. Outline loops in front of the legs and a large curve behind the shoulder and above the head.

Step 4: Refine Omega Red’s face and hair
Use clear, dark lines to carefully draw the eyes, nose, and mouth. Add the exposed teeth and short creases beside the nose and mouth. Then define the jaw and eyebrows. Draw his long hair with long curved lines. Separate the pointed locks beside the face and the swept-back strands of the ponytail. Add the omega symbol in the center of the headband.

Step 5: Detail the shoulder pads and torso
Let’s work on the torso details. Use clear, dark lines to draw the shoulder pads. Next, define Omega Red’s pectoral muscles. Refine the outer contours of the torso and draw the abdominal muscles. Add the narrow belt and divide it into sections with short vertical lines. Erase the unnecessary guidelines from this area.

Step 6: Draw the muscular arms and tentacles
Detailing the arms is another fairly difficult task. Use clear, dark lines to define the large deltoids, biceps, and forearm muscles. Trace Omega Red’s wrist guards with wider upper edges. Carefully draw the hands and refine the long tentacles extending from the wrists. Outline the thumbs and individually curled fingers. Follow each tentacle’s bends with two smooth contours, and erase the lines hidden behind the hands and hair.

Step 7: Refine the powerful legs and boots
Carefully trace the contours of Omega Red’s legs with dark, curved lines. Define the muscles and the details around the knees, then draw his large boots. Outline the high, pointed cuffs and add narrow bands across their fronts. Add a few horizontal folds to the costume below the belt. Erase the guidelines from the lower body.

Step 8: Detail the tentacles and add shadows
First, draw lines along the length of the tentacles. Add short curved lines across them at regular intervals. Then add shadows with dense hatching. Place smaller patches of hatching on the hands and inside the tentacle loops. You can also use large areas of solid black for a classic comic-book look, as in our Batgirl drawing tutorial.

Knowing how to draw the male figure, remembering the basics of drawing that we often discuss on our website, and keeping the steps from this tutorial in mind, you will now be able to depict this comic-book villain in different poses.
Although the character has not had as many different costumes throughout his history as some more popular villains, his appearance has varied noticeably depending on the artist and the period. So you do not have to copy the costume details from our example exactly and can instead use the version you like most.
Omega Red is a fairly well-known character, but it is difficult to place him among the most popular villains who have opposed Wolverine. Among the more famous ones, of course, is Creed, whom we showed how to draw in our Sabretooth drawing tutorial.
If you study these tutorials, you will notice that the basic principles of drawing are generally very similar. In each case, you are drawing a powerful, massive character with developed musculature in a classic comic-book style with strong, contrasting shadows. By the way, we used the same style in our tutorial on how to draw Wolverine.
