How to Draw Spawn

Spawn is one of the most famous characters from Image Comics, created by Todd McFarlane. In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw Spawn in his classic comic book appearance.
How to draw Spawn step by step
Step 1: Sketch Spawn’s basic figure
Start with the skeleton of Spawn, which we usually call a stick figure. Outline the head, then draw the lines of the neck and spine. The distance from the chin to the pelvis is approximately equal to the height of three heads. Along the spine, sketch a wide chest and a narrow pelvis. Indicate the arms and legs with simple lines.

Step 2: Give Spawn’s body volume
Now give each part of the body some volume. We recommend working from top to bottom, especially since Spawn is standing straight in this drawing.
First, draw two intersecting guidelines on the face. Connect the chest and pelvis, making the waist noticeably narrower than the shoulders. Mark the shoulder, elbow, and knee joints with circles, then build the arms and legs from modified cylindrical forms. The upper arms and thighs should be thicker than the lower sections. Finish by giving the hands and feet more definite shapes.

Step 3: Outline the mask and cape
At this stage, add the basic details that distinguish Spawn from an ordinary muscular figure. Begin with the head, lightly marking the eyes and the main contours of the mask. Then outline the high collar rising behind his neck. Sketch the large cape, using long, curved lines.

Step 4: Draw the costume’s white markings
Continue working on Spawn’s costume. Draw the large markings that form an angular pattern resembling the letter M across his chest and abdomen. Follow the shape of the pectoral and abdominal muscles.

Step 5: Finish Spawn’s masked head
Draw the distinctive shapes around Spawn’s eyes, following the contours established earlier. Make the markings sharp and angular. Refine the outline of the head and the lower part of the mask. Once these details are complete, erase the unnecessary guidelines from the head.

Step 6: Detail the torso and chains
Draw the muscles of the neck, then refine the outer contours of the chest and waist. Outline the large pectoral muscles and add the divisions of the abdominal muscles. Next, draw the chain and small skull ornaments near the collarbones. Give the chain links some thickness. Remove the central spine guideline if it is still visible.

Step 7: Draw the arms and gloves
Outline the deltoids, biceps, and triceps, making the muscles large and massive. Next, draw the large sections of the gloves covering the forearms. Carefully draw the hands, outlining the fingers and knuckles. Add the long decorative lines running along the gloves and forearms. Finish by erasing the construction lines from the arms.

Step 8: Refine the legs and boots
Replace the rough construction lines with the final contours, detailing the large thigh muscles and the forms of the lower legs. Add a few folds around the knees. Use short curved strokes to separate the main muscle groups. Draw the boots and remove the remaining guidelines from the legs.

Step 9: Complete the cape
In the final step, clean up the entire Spawn drawing. Erase any guidelines that are still visible and go over the main contours to make them smooth and clear. Draw the cape in more details and add several folds to its left side. Check the smaller details of the costume and chains.

Remember that to draw a superhero or supervillain, you need to keep the basic principles of drawing the human figure in mind.
The remaining details and elements are added during the drawing process and make the drawing look more like the character you are depicting.
For example, drawing Spawn and drawing Captain America or other classic superheroes have much in common in this respect.
Spawn’s cape is one of the most distinctive elements of his design, and it can take many different shapes. Try drawing it spreading farther to the sides or wrapping around his body.
You can also add strong black shadows to the costume to make the drawing closer to the dark, high-contrast style of the original comics.
