How to Draw a Brush

In this step-by-step tutorial, we will show you how to draw a brush. Here we will construct a wide flat brush that can be useful both to an artist and a builder.
How to draw a brush step by step
Step 1: Block in the brush
Sketch a large rectangular shape for the ferrule and bristles of the brush. Above it, outline the handle with very light lines. Try to sketch the main parts aligned. Pay attention to their relative width and length. Use simple shapes without adding details.

Step 2: Separate ferrule and bristles
Now use straight lines to separate the bristles from the metal ferrule. At the opposite end of the brush, draw a small hole in the handle. Refine the connection between the handle and ferrule using a couple of short smooth lines. Keep the lines light because we will erase them partially in the next steps.

Step 3: Refine the outer contours
Erase the unnecessary construction lines from the previous steps. Then trace the main contours of the brush with cleaner and darker lines. Smooth the shape of the handle and clarify the edges of the ferrule and bristles.

Step 4: Detail the bristles and ferrule
Use short strokes to show individual groups of bristles along the lower edge of the brush. Don’t try to make every line identical. Then add a couple of horizontal lines and small round rivets to the ferrule. These simple details will make the brush drawing look even more realistic.

Step 5: Add light and shadow
Start adding simple shadows to give the brush drawing a more dimensional look. Add more shorts liens to the bristles. Use short strokes to create highlights on the metal surface.

This simple tutorial showed you how to draw a brush, but only in one form. Other forms are drawn in approximately the same way. A brush consists of two basic parts, and both can have different shapes.
The handle can be longer or shorter, thicker or thinner, with or without a hole at the end. The bristles can also be wide and flat or narrow and elongated. Try different combinations using the sequence of steps you already know.
For further practice, try to draw a pen, another simple object with an elongated shape. Or draw a cup to practice drawing a very different form.
