How to Draw Tongs

In the kitchen, you can find many simple objects to draw. In this tutorial, we will work with one of them and learn how to draw tongs step by step.

We will show you how to outline the general shape of the tool, add details, and create volume with simple shadows.

How to draw tongs step by step

Step 1: Mark the long handles

Block in two long and narrow rectangles that converge at one point. These shapes will become the handles of our tongs. Try to make them approximately the same width and place them at a slight angle to each other. Use light lines at this stage because they will be partially erased in the next steps.

Step 2: Add the gripping ends

At the tips of the rectangles, draw two oval shapes. These ovals will become the gripping ends of the tongs. Try to make them approximately the same size and place them opposite each other. At this stage, we still use simple and light lines without adding small details.

Step 3: Refine the tong handles

Using clear and dark lines, draw the handles of the tongs in detail. Make their contours smooth. They should be connected at the upper point. Do not forget to draw the round rivet at the point where the handles converge. After that, erase the unnecessary light lines around the handles.

Step 4: Shape the wavy tips

Now go to the tips of the tongs and draw them with wavy lines. Try to make the two gripping ends similar in shape and size. Carefully connect these parts with the long handles that we drew earlier. Remove all unnecessary guidelines and make the final contours clear and neat.

Step 5: Add shadows and highlights

Now let’s add some shadows and highlights using hatching. Place the highlights mainly along the sides of the handles and on the gripping ends of the tongs. Use slightly dense hatching in the darkest areas for shadows. This will make our drawing look more complete.
