How to Draw Lettuce

Lettuce has a characteristic shape with many leaves that an artist needs to convey correctly on paper. In this step-by-step tutorial, we will show you how to draw lettuce, depict the leaves correctly, and achieve a convincing look on paper with very simple hatched shadows.

How to draw lettuce step by step

Step 1: Sketch the lettuce outline

First, lightly sketch the overall outline of the lettuce. The shape should be wide at the top and taper slightly toward the bottom. Use very light lines, because you will need to erase some of them later. This is the overall mass of the vegetable, which will later be divided into individual leaves.

Step 2: Draw the outer leaves

Fortunately, we do not need to draw the lettuce in section, so here you only need to outline the leaves visible from the outside. Use light, wavy lines to show the smooth and uneven leaf edges. The leaves should spread out neatly from the base upwards and slightly to the sides. At the bottom, draw a small oval for the cut base of the lettuce.

Step 3: Draw the leaf veins

Make the outlines of the leaves more uneven, as in our example. Erase the extra lines from the previous steps. After that, draw the veins on the surface of the leaves using long, slightly winding lines. Run the main veins from the base toward the upper parts of the leaves and add shorter side veins extending toward the wavy edges.

Step 4: Shade the overlapping leaves

In our example, the shadows look like areas of wide hatching. When drawing them, consider the bends of the leaves and the way they overlap. Place denser hatching in the narrow spaces beneath overlapping leaf edges and on the parts of the leaves that turn away from the light. Also shade the oval cut surface at the base of the lettuce.

The most important thing when drawing lettuce is to keep a few points in mind, the main one being to start with a large basic form and then divide it into individual leaves.

Several layers of leaves create the characteristic appearance that allows the viewer to recognize the lettuce. Another important point is adding the shadows correctly.

First, they should follow the form, and second, they should mainly cover the inner areas beneath the outer leaves.
