How to Draw Cute Eyes

For an artist, it is very important to be able to convey different variations of facial features. That is why we created this lesson on how to draw cute eyes.
This guide is based on our main eye drawing tutorial, but focuses specifically on conveying cuteness in the image, even though this quality can be subjective.
We will show in detail which features and elements can give the eyes a specific look and how to convey them correctly on paper, as well as which drawing variations can be used to achieve different styles of cute eyes.
How to draw cute eyes step by step
Step 1: Sketch intersecting guides for eye placement
Before drawing, decide on the placement of the eyes on the paper. In this case, outline their location using two intersecting lines. The horizontal line marks the lower eye level, and the vertical line indicates symmetry. This intersection will also serve as the center of the face, indicating the bridge of the nose if you draw cute eyes on a full human head.

Step 2: Draw the upper edges of the cute eyes
Find an equal distance from the centerline and mark the inner corners of the eyes on the horizontal line. Then indicate the outer corners, keeping in mind that the distance between the eyes is roughly equal to their width. This is not strict, since the eyes can be placed at different distances. Make the arcs fairly high so the eyes appear large, which is one way to make them look cute.

Step 3: Draw the lower edges of the cute eyes
Now draw the lower edges of the eyes, connecting the inner and outer corners of each. This creates the eye outlines. The eye shape and tilt can vary greatly from person to person. You can slightly adjust these features, and keeping the eyes wide open will make the drawing look cuter.

Step 4: Draw large irises and pupils
To give the eyes a cuter appearance, draw the pupils and irises slightly closer to the center than you would for a neutral expression. In addition to their placement, make the pupils and irises slightly larger than usual to enhance the cute look.

Step 5: Draw thick symmetrical eyelashes
Large eyelashes can also make the eye drawing appear cuter. Draw them as symmetrically as possible so the left and right sides match. Try to keep the eye anatomy in mind even when drawing them in a simplified or slightly modified style.

Step 6: Erase the guides and add shading
Erase all construction lines, cleaning the drawing and leaving only the essential parts. Then, using slightly stronger pencil pressure, refine the lines to give them a cleaner, finished look. Add hatching to the pupils and irises to introduce tone. Keep the principles of light and shadow in mind, and apply shading to give the eyes a more volumetric appearance. Be sure to leave large highlights inside the eyes, as this will create an additional sense of cuteness in the drawing.

Step 7: Check symmetry and refine tones
The drawing should look cohesive and complete, with no details standing out from the whole. Check that the left and right eyes remain proportional, the symmetry is preserved, and the tonal relationships appear natural. Here you can deepen the shadows where needed and emphasize specific parts of the drawing, for example making the eyelashes more contrasty.

Drawing variations and emotions of cute eyes
The idea of “cute eyes” is certainly subjective, and different people may visualize it in different ways. However, since humans belong to the same species, our visual perceptions are very similar, regardless of who we are or which part of the world we come from.
In this step-by-step, we showed in detail how to draw cute eyes, summarizing the key nuances needed to convey this look in a drawing.
At the same time, drawing cute eyes, like any other variation, is based on a general understanding of human anatomy and the construction of this part of the face.
Using these fundamental principles and methods, try drawing other variations based on references.

Humans are very diverse, so you can create a huge number of cute eye variations. Use our references or draw from memory – the key is to practice as often as possible.
In addition to differences in eye features, the emotions can also vary. Cute eyes do not have to look kind or naive; they can be cute yet angry, sly, frightened, and so on.
These subtle variations and nuances should also be practiced. Try simplifying the drawings and making quick sketches that convey different emotions through the eyes while keeping them cute, using our references as a guide.

In addition, try sketching not only the frontal view, but also draw eyes in three-quarter view, giving them a cute and expressive appearance.
It is also important not only to draw cute eyes separately, but to combine them with other cute facial features to create a complete image.
You can draw in a more realistic or cartoon style, change the head position, and add various accessories such as glasses. Try to practice as diversely and as often as possible, since this is the key to mastering the nuances.
