How to Draw a Bar of Soap

A classic bar of soap is most often depicted as an elongated cuboid form. In this step-by-step tutorial, we will show you how to draw a bar of soap in exactly this cuboid form, although all of the steps are equally applicable to depicting other shapes as well.

When a cuboid bar of soap is viewed at an angle, three surfaces are visible. By drawing these surfaces correctly and adding the lettering, you will complete most of the work, and in the steps below we will show you how to do this.

How to draw a bar of soap step by step

Step 1: Outline the soap’s rectangular shape

Drawing a bar of soap follows the basic principles of drawing a cube. Therefore, start by indicating the front surface of the soap bar. Use light lines to draw the side edges, as well as the upper and lower edges in slight perspective.

Step 2: Add thickness to the bar

Add a few lines to give the soap thickness. The drawing should now look like a rectangular block or brick. By the way, we chose a rectangular bar, but you can adapt these steps to draw soap in other shapes. Extend short diagonal lines upward and left from both upper corners and the lower left corner. Connect their ends to form the narrow top and left faces.

Step 3: Add lettering to the soap

To make the bar look more like soap than a brick, add lettering to its surface. We just wrote the word “soap,” but of course you can write the name of your favorite soap. In addition to the lettering, you can add a decorative pattern. Center the outlined capital letters on the front face.

Step 4: Shade the bar of soap

Add shadows to give the soap drawing a more three-dimensional appearance. In addition to shading the soap itself, draw a cast shadow on the surface beneath it so it does not appear to float in the air. Cover the narrow left face with diagonal hatching and extend the cast shadow to the left of the base. Leave the top and front faces mostly white.

Here we drew a simple bar of soap, but of course you can draw other versions. Change the shape or lettering to give your soap a more individual design.

A similar approach is used when you draw a liquid soap dispenser if it has a rectangular shape. First, use light lines to indicate the overall basic cuboid form and its surfaces, and then add the details to the drawing.

So always remember that the basic form is the foundation, and it determines how the drawing develops from there.
