How to Draw Rainbow Dash

For fans of the My Little Pony series, we have prepared another lesson in which we would like to show you how to draw Rainbow Dash.

We’ve already shown how to draw Twilight Sparkle, and in this tutorial we used the same methods, but adapted them to include the distinctive features of this particular pony.

These characters have a distinctive appearance, with angular hooves, simplified details and body parts, as well as other characteristic features.

How to draw Rainbow Dash step by step

Step 1: Draw the pony’s basic head shape

As with drawing other similar characters, start with the head and sketch it as an oval shape. The angle of this oval will determine the direction the head is facing.

Step 2: Draw the eye of Rainbow Dash

Just below the center of the oval, draw a horizontal guideline that will help you sketch the contours of the face. Then, directly on this line, draw the cartoon eye of the pony in the center area.

Step 3: Sketch the pony’s body shape

Below and slightly behind the head, draw the torso in the shape of a bean-like form. Leave a small gap between the head and the torso so that you can connect them with the neck lines later.

Step 4: Draw the neck of Rainbow Dash

Now connect the head and torso with two smooth lines to create the contours of the neck. In the lower right part of the head oval, draw the pony’s nose and smiling mouth.

Step 5: Sketch the pony’s limb shapes

Move to the lower part of the drawing and carefully sketch Rainbow Dash’s legs. Notice that they consist of upper sections and lower sections that gradually widen toward the hooves.

Step 6: Detail the head of the little pony

Inside the eye, draw the pupil of Rainbow Dash and add a couple of small circular highlights. Then add the eyelashes using three thick lines. Draw the ear on the head, as well as the cartoon pony’s bangs with pointed ends.

Step 7: Refine pony’s eye and mane

Fill the pupil with solid black, leaving the highlights white. On the neck, just below the ear, draw the back section of the mane flowing down toward the pony’s back.

Step 8: Clean and refine Rainbow Dash drawing

Carefully erase all the construction lines created in the earlier steps of the drawing lesson. Add a nostril on the muzzle and a subtle tongue inside the mouth.

Step 9: Draw the tail of Rainbow Dash

At the back of the torso, draw the tail of Rainbow Dash. It should gradually widen toward the middle and split into several separate tufts of hair. The shape of the tail should visually match the shape of the hairstyle.

Step 10: Detail the pony’s mane and tail

In the My Little Pony cartoons, the characters have a simplified but distinctive hair texture. Show this texture with long, flowing lines on both the mane and the tail.

Step 11: Sketch the pony’s feathered wings

Draw the lower parts of the wings of Rainbow Dash using short curved lines. Then add the upper parts of the wings with longer lines. The wings should spread slightly outward in a fan-like shape.

Step 12: Sketch the pony’s signature symbol

Draw the cloud and lightning bolt cutie mark on the leg near the tail, which is Rainbow Dash’s distinctive symbol. Then trace over the entire drawing with darker, cleaner lines, varying their thickness slightly to create a more interesting final look.

Understanding the My Little Pony Drawing style

As mentioned at the beginning of this drawing tutorial, the pony characters from this animated series have a clearly defined style that remains consistent throughout the franchise.

The characters feature distinctive facial designs, unique personalities, and recognizable visual traits.

Their recognizability is achieved through classic artistic techniques such as simplification and stylization. Large eyes with highlights, manes and tails drawn with simple overall shapes, slightly angular hooves, and heavily simplified details all contribute to the visual style.

Combined with distinctive color schemes and the unique symbols displayed on each character, these elements make the characters recognizable even to people who are not very familiar with the universe.

Because of this, once you learn how to draw one pony, you can easily apply the same principles to draw Rarity or any other member of the series.
