How to Draw Baby Yoda (The Child)

Completed Baby Yoda drawing with large ears, robe, and light shading.

Star Wars is full of extremely interesting and charismatic characters. In this step-by-step tutorial, we will show you how to draw Baby Yoda, or Grogu – one of the most interesting and popular characters from the franchise.

This character became extremely popular on the Internet, and his characteristic appearance became familiar to almost everyone.

How to draw Baby Yoda step by step

Step 1: Sketch Grogu’s basic shapes

First, draw the approximate contours of Baby Yoda’s head and torso. The head is very large, as you can see. Its width and length significantly exceed the size of the body. This is also a characteristic feature when drawing a baby. You can see a similar relationship between the head and body when drawing a cartoon baby.

Step 2: Draw the large eyes

Now outline the contours of two almond-shaped eyes. Baby Yoda’s eyes should be very large, so pay attention to their size. The lower edges of the eyes should be approximately one-third of the way up the face.

Step 3: Add the facial features

Add a small nose and mouth. The nose should be slightly higher than the lower edges of the eyes. Draw the mouth with three smoothly curved lines.

Step 4: Outline the pointed ears

Another noteworthy feature of our character is his ears. Baby Yoda has huge pointed ears that extend almost horizontally. Note that drawing Master Yoda involves somewhat smaller ears.

Step 5: Refine the large ears

Baby Yoda has really large ears. Let’s work on this feature to make the little alien more detailed. Draw the inner contours of the ears, then add a couple of short vertical strokes on each side.

Step 6: Add wrinkles and folds

Now add wrinkles and skin folds. As you can see, these are not a sign of old age here. First, draw curved lines above and below the eyes. Then draw three vertical wrinkles between the eyes that resemble the pattern of Spider-Man’s mask. Add horizontal wavy lines to the forehead, followed by small but important lines above the nose and mouth.

Step 7: Outline the robe collar

Now outline the contours of the warm collar. Also draw a couple of vertical lines on Baby Yoda’s body.

Step 8: Draw the robe sleeves

Let’s finish the basic contours of the body. To do this, outline the robe sleeves with wide cuffs at the ends.

Step 9: Add the small hands

Remember Master Yoda’s hands? Baby Yoda has similar small hands with three fingers and tiny pointed nails. Draw them extending from the ends of the sleeves.

Step 10: Refine the final outlines

Now look over the Baby Yoda drawing and check the overall shapes and individual details. If you do not see any distortions or inaccuracies, erase the unnecessary guidelines and refine the final outlines.

Step 11: Add the final shadows

Let’s add some shadows. You can see shadows inside Baby Yoda’s ears, under his collar, and lightly across his face. Large shadows are best applied in two stages. First, draw the outline of the shadow, and then fill it with light shading. Very small shadows can be drawn without an outline.

Step 12: Finish the Baby Yoda drawing

    2. This is an odd thing to do. But, I learned it years ago when I took a drawing class… try drawing upside down. If that doesn’t work, try starting by drawing your hand without looking at your sketchbook. Then draw whatever your heart desires. Both techniques are designed to get you into your artistic brain and out of your logical parts.
