Continuing our series of musical instrument drawing tutorials, we want to show you how to draw a balalaika, one of the most recognizable symbols of Slavic culture.

Earlier, we also showed you how to draw a matryoshka, another symbol known all over the world. In fact, these two objects share many common visual features, including the decorative patterns that are often very similar.

Moreover, drawing such ornaments is a whole branch of fine art in many Slavic countries.

Here, however, we will focus primarily on drawing the balalaika itself and accurately conveying its form, so let’s begin.

How to draw a balalaika step by step

Step 1: Sketch the instrument’s triangular body

The balalaika is fundamentally based on a triangular shape, unlike a guitar, whose body resembles the shape of an eight. Start with this basic form, sketching it with light lines while trying to maintain the correct proportions.

Step 2: Sketch the balalaika neck

Using elongated rectangle draw the neck of the balalaika. Neck length should be equal to body length. You can use your pencil to compare sizes and proportions.

Step 3: Draw the headstock of the balalaika

At the very top, depict the headstock of the balalaika using a polygonal geometric shape.

Step 4: Refine the contours of the balalaika

Although the body of the balalaika is based on a triangular shape, it is rarely perfectly straight and geometric. The form consists of slightly curved lines, so give the body a more natural appearance. Then erase the construction lines at the connection between the body and the neck.

Step 5: Add the decorative patterns and tuning pegs

As mentioned in the introduction to this lesson, balalaikas are often decorated with traditional folk patterns, so try to recreate them in your drawing. Also, using small circles, depict the tuning pegs on the headstock.

Step 6: Sketch the sound hole and frets

On the body of the balalaika, draw a round sound hole with a decorative pattern around it resembling a flower. Then add the frets and small circular markers on the neck.

Step 7: Draw the strings of the balalaika

Closer to the base of the triangle, draw the lines connecting the strings. Then connect these lines to the headstock of the balalaika using long, straight lines.

Step 8: Complete the balalaika with hatching

Shade the sound hole of the balalaika to give it a more convincing appearance. At this stage, you can also add a bit of tone to certain parts of the drawing, recheck the proportions, and give the artwork a more finished look.

Drawing musical instruments and cultural symbols

Drawing symbolic objects such as a balalaika is especially interesting because you simultaneously practice drawing objects while also becoming familiar with the culture of a particular region.

For example, you could draw the Olympic Bear and remember the different Olympic mascots that changed over the years and each had their own distinctive features.

At the same time, a balalaika is not only a cultural symbol but also a musical instrument. In many ways, it is similar to instruments such as a guitar or even a violin, meaning it belongs to the family of string instruments.

For more in-depth practice drawing instruments of this type, we strongly recommend studying our guitar drawing tutorial as well as other similar objects. This will help you feel much more confident when constructing such forms on paper.

While drawing these objects, compare them with one another and pay attention to the differences in their proportions and shapes.

This will help you not only better understand their visual distinctions, but also learn how to correctly construct the forms of simple objects in drawing.
