How to Draw a Skateboard

Finished skateboard drawing with detailed deck, trucks, wheels, and shading

This tutorial will show you how to draw a skateboard step by step and recreate its realistic shape with simple shading.

This piece of sports equipment, loved by many, has become a symbol of street sports. There are professional skateboarders who earn money by competing and performing demonstrations.

How to draw a skateboard step by step

Step 1: Sketch the skateboard deck

First, sketch the outline of the deck. Both ends should curve upward. Keep in mind that, because of perspective, the closer end should appear slightly larger than the one farther away.

Step 2: Add the deck edge

Draw the side edge of the skateboard. The edge should closely follow the curves of the deck from the previous step.

Step 3: Draw the skateboard wheels

Now draw the three wheels that are visible beneath the deck. Each wheel is made of two circular parts.

Step 4: Sketch the skateboard trucks

Use straight lines to draw the trucks, the metal parts that connect the wheels to the wooden deck.

Step 5: Finish drawing the skateboard with shading

Shade the side edge of the deck with long strokes, leaving highlights along the raised areas. Add a few short strokes to the top of the deck, then shade the wheels while preserving small highlights.

This tutorial showed you how to draw a skateboard. If you’d like to continue drawing equipment for outdoor activities, try sketching a scooter or draw a bike. Both tutorials use many of the same principles for drawing wheels and perspective.

Skateboards are closely associated with street culture and many famous characters. You can continue by drawing Bart Simpson, one of the best-known cartoon skateboarders.

You can also try illustrating a freestyle football player to practice another popular street sport.
