How to Draw a Lion Head

Now we will show you how to draw a lion head, capture its distinctive facial features, and convey its voluminous mane.

When drawing a lion’s face, many of the same principles from our cat head drawing lesson apply, but with a few important differences.

First, the overall facial structure is similar across the feline family, yet it is the specific proportions that change the look – for example, the relationship between the eyes and the muzzle, and the shape and placement of the ears.

The most distinctive feature, of course, is the lion’s mane, which immediately sets a lion’s head apart from other big cats.

In this lesson, we will show you step by step how to build the overall structure first, then add the details, and finally make the lion’s head drawing look three-dimensional and realistic.

How to draw a lion head step by step

Step 1: Draw the outline of the lion face

The foundation of the entire lion head structure is a simple oval shape around which the outlines and details will be built. Begin by sketching this oval in the center of the page, keeping in mind that you should leave space above for the mane and ears, and below for the muzzle and the lower part of the mane.

Step 2: Sketch the mane and facial guidelines

Now add a few simple guidelines to the oval from the previous step. The vertical line will indicate the symmetry of the face, and the horizontal line will help define the placement of the eyes. If you have followed our other lessons, you have likely used this method before. In this step, also sketch the general outline of the large, dimensional mane surrounding the head.

Step 3: Draw the outlines of the lion face and ears

Now begin adding the main volumes to the lion’s head, focusing on the largest forms first. Lightly outline the contours of the mane. Then sketch the shape of the muzzle, keeping the facial features symmetrical. At the top, indicate the rounded ears, and place the eyes in the central area of the face.

Step 4: Illustrate the eyes and pupils

Now, using smooth and darker lines, carefully draw the outlines of the eyes in the lion head, applying the same principles we discussed in the cat eye drawing lesson. Inside the eyes, sketch the pupils. The smaller the pupils, the more intense and fierce the lion’s expression will appear.

Step 5: Draw the lion nose in detail

Using the guidelines drawn earlier, carefully sketch the nose, placing it relatively low on the face. Draw the nostrils and add a few small but noticeable folds extending outward to the sides. Make sure the left and right sides of the lion’s nose are symmetrical in both size and shape.

Step 6: Detail the mouth of the animal

Now use smooth lines to carefully define the contours of the lion’s mouth. You can add a bit of fur texture in certain areas with a few short strokes. Then, using similar short strokes, indicate the rounded chin of the lion just below.

Step 7: Draw the mane of the lion in detail

Add several strands of hair at the top and along the sides to suggest the texture of the mane. Then refine and define the overall contours, working evenly on both sides so that the lion’s head appears balanced, three-dimensional, and realistic.

Step 8: Clean up the contours and shapes

Carefully erase all construction lines from the lion’s head drawing, leaving only the essential contours and details. Refine the shapes, check the proportions, and correct any inaccuracies if necessary.

Step 9: Add shading to the lion face

At the final stage, add shadows to complete the drawing. Shade the mane using many wavy, closely spaced lines, varying their direction so they do not all run the same way. This approach helps create a more natural and realistic appearance. Also apply darker, denser shading to the eyes, nose, and mouth.

Step 10: Review and finalize the lion head

Do a final check of the drawing’s proportions and accuracy, and fix any remaining issues. Compare the right and left sides and view the drawing from a distance. Add more shadows and midtones to increase the sense of volume and create a more realistic tonal range in your lion head drawing.

Review and finalize the lion head

To draw a lion head correctly, you need to understand how to construct volume and form accurately.

In this lesson, we aimed to explain these principles in a clear and straightforward way without going too deeply into unnecessary details.

Consistent practice is essential – try drawing a lion’s head in different poses and with varied facial expressions.

After completing all the steps, repeat the process from a different angle or with a different expression. For example, you might draw a lion with a roaring expression or, on the contrary, with its eyes closed in a resting pose.

It can also be helpful to review our tiger head drawing lesson, where we explain how to depict another member of the feline family with its own distinctive features.

  1. I really liked the instructions you used for me to be able to use this but next time you do a wild cat of any sort you should make them more realistic and make them look more determined when you draw them. I love it but that’s just my opinion you do not have to go by it if you don’t want to.

  2. You should also not just do wild cats you should do big and small animals from all over the world! You could even make hybrids! Just some advise for the people.
