How to Draw a Cartoon Snail

Continuing with the theme of cartoon animals, we want to show you how to draw a cartoon snail for beginners.
The cartoon style, being more simplified in many ways, is especially well suited for artists who have just started their path in visual art.
All the basic fundamentals that exist in the academic style are simplified here, but still partially present. In addition, studying drawing in a cartoon style greatly helps develop stylization in your work.
We discussed this in our cartoon turtle drawing tutorial. This tutorial will be similar in many ways, of course with certain nuances, so let’s begin.
How to draw a cartoon snail step by step
Step 1: Block in the cartoon animal torso
As with drawing a cartoon turtle, start by sketching a large sphere for the main part of the animal’s body. Keep in mind that this part will be modified later, so use light lines for now.

Step 2: Draw the cartoon snail torso
Now, in the lower left area, draw the head, connecting it to the torso with a long, smooth, tapering neck. The overall shape of the head and neck together resembles a droplet.

Step 3: Sketch the antennae and shell edge
On the upper part of the head, draw the snail’s antennae as two curved lines resembling commas. In the lower part of the torso, draw the edge of the shell extending from the neck to the back. At the rear, under the shell, add an elongated triangular tail.

Step 4: Draw the snail eyes and shell spiral
On the head, draw the cartoon eyes as two spheres with round pupils inside. One eye should slightly overlap the other. Then smoothly draw the characteristic pattern on the snail’s shell as a spiral that gradually expands from the center outward.

Step 5: Erase guides and refine the snail drawing
Carefully erase all the construction lines from your snail drawing and add a smile to the face. You can also fill in the eyes with black, leaving small round highlights inside. Add additional texture to the shell in the form of short lines radiating from the center.

Step 6: Add shading to the cartoon animal
Outline the shadow areas, separating them from the lit parts. Then fill in the shadow areas with simple, even hatching. Under the snail’s body, you can draw a cast shadow as a simple shape without trying to show details.

Step 7: Trace the snail with bold outlines
To emphasize the cartoon style in your snail drawing, trace it with dark, bold lines. You can use a 5B pencil or any other tool capable of creating very dark, black lines. You can also vary the line thickness to convey volume and weight in the drawing.

Practice in cartoon animals
The cartoon style is very simple yet has its own distinctive features, making it accessible for beginner artists.
However, to gain a deeper understanding of this style, regular practice is still necessary. Like any other style, the cartoon style involves a set of methods and techniques that we, for example, covered in our cartoon chicken drawing tutorial.
This can be seen as a kind of formula that you can use in your work, just as any artist does. By understanding the fundamental techniques, you will be able to draw not only a cartoon snail but any other animal in this style.
In addition, the cartoon style does not imply a single fixed solution for depiction. Each artist can handle the nuances in their own way.
Try to develop your own style by drawing a cartoon snail in different ways, changing various elements as you see fit or using cartoon references from the internet or from well-known characters, such as Gary the Snail.
