How to Draw a Cartoon Rose

This truly simple tutorial, created for beginner artists, will show you how to draw a cartoon rose using simple lines and shapes.
On our site, there is already a detailed and in-depth rose drawing tutorial where we showed how to depict this flower in our traditional academic style.
In addition, we demonstrated how to draw this flower in different variations and forms using a more complex and detailed approach.
Here, however, we want to simplify everything as much as possible and show how artists and animators draw roses in their works.
For this reason, we decided to use maximum simplification both in the forms and in the drawing process.
How to draw a cartoon rose step by step
Step 1: Sketch the cartoon rosebud and stem
Start by sketching an oval for the bud. Next, sketch the stem of the rose using a long, slightly curved line. The lines should be very light so they can be easily corrected later.

Step 2: Draw the inner petals of the cartoon rose
From this point on, begin using darker and sharper lines. At the top of the oval bud, sketch the outlines of the inner petals. The contours of the petals should be slightly wavy.

Step 3: Draw the surrounding rose petals
Now, with a few more lines, sketch the edges of the petals surrounding the ones created earlier. Do not try to repeat all the outlines exactly. You can create your own arrangement of rose petals.

Step 4: Add the middle layers of rose petals
Continue creating the petals of the rose. Each new row of petals should be larger than the previous one. In addition, each new petal should be drawn around the petals created earlier.

Step 5: Draw the outer petals of the cartoon rose
Now sketch the outer petals. They should be noticeably larger than the previously drawn petals. In addition, the outer petals should have more wavy contours than the others.

Step 6: Draw the lower bud edge and sepals
Use a smooth U-shaped line to refine the lower edge of the bud. Draw the sepals beneath the rosebud using a few curved lines.

Step 7: Draw the cartoon stem of the rose
Depict the stem using a pair of long, clear lines. Use a short diagonal line to draw the lower edge of the stem. To make your sketch look more convincing and natural, you can also add thorns.

Step 8: Erase guides and sketch the branches
Take an eraser and remove any unnecessary construction lines from your sketch. Then, using a few curved lines, draw the twigs extending from the sides of the stem.

Step 9: Draw the cartoon leaves of the rose
Draw the leaves of the cartoon rose using a few simple lines. The leaves as well as the petals should have wavy outlines. Don’t forget to depict the veins on the leaves.

Step 10: Clean, trace, and polish the rose
Try to find mistakes in your sketch and correct them. If there are no mistakes and your rose drawing looks like ours, or even better, then you have done an excellent job and are ready to move on to more complex tutorials.

Features of drawing cartoon flowers
As with drawing absolutely any other object in this highly simplified cartoon style, it is important to follow the main principles of the approach.
When drawing cartoon cats, other animals, or characters, we always try to simplify all forms as much as possible while still preserving recognizability. The same principle applies here with a rose, as with any other flower.
When drawing a cartoon rose, you should simplify everything and avoid unnecessary details while still keeping the essential basic elements.
These are primarily the bud with petals spiraling around the center, as well as the characteristic stem and leaves. If you correctly convey the form while simplifying the details, the cartoon rose drawing will look both simple and convincing.
To improve your rose drawing skills, try sketching this beautiful flower from different angles. You can also try sketching a bouquet of roses or draw a vase and place the flower inside.
In addition, add shadows or color to your artwork. All of these exercises will help you strengthen your skills and learn how to draw a rose more confidently and naturally.
The background will help your artwork look more natural. Of course, you are free to choose any setting you like. You can draw either the interior of your own room or a beautiful garden filled with flowers.
Our team regularly emphasizes that the most important thing every artist should do is practice. The more often you draw, the more convincing and accurate your results will become.
If for some reason you are not satisfied with your rose drawing and expected a different result, do not worry. Simply try again while correcting the mistakes made earlier. No one becomes an artist immediately after picking up a pencil for the first time.
All great artists, from Leonardo da Vinci to Mark Bagley, achieved their skill through many years of practice. In the same way, you can also reach impressive results in art if you continue practicing and drawing regularly with us.
