How to Draw a Blueberry

Finished blueberry drawing with a detailed calyx and hatched shadows.

We continue our series of articles on how to draw different wild berries. This time, we chose a blueberry. The shape of this berry is slightly different, but the main principles of drawing remain the same. So, let’s see how to draw a blueberry and give it a three-dimensional look using simple techniques.

How to draw a blueberry step by step

Step 1: Sketch the berry shape

First, you need to draw the contours of the blueberry, so start with a simple circle. Think of this shape as a three-dimensional sphere. If it turns out slightly asymmetrical and a bit flattened, this is not an error.

Sketching the blueberry as a slightly flattened and irregular round shape.

Step 2: Sketch the blueberry calyx

At the top of the circle, sketch a small oval. Note that it should not touch the edge. This oval marks the center of the calyx and should follow the spherical surface of the berry. Then draw five wide leaves around this oval. Now that you have completed the basic blueberry sketch, it is time to work on the details.

Adding a small oval and five broad calyx lobes to the blueberry.

Step 3: Refine the berry calyx

Most of the details in this drawing are concentrated in the small area where the calyx is located, so work mainly with this part. Add a border around the small oval. Then erase the extra lines inside the contours of the leaves.

Refining the blueberry calyx and removing unnecessary lines between its leaves.

Step 4: Add shadows to the blueberry

Notice how the shadows on the calyx differ from those on the berry itself. The difference comes from the intensity of the hatching. To make a shadow darker, apply more strokes and make the hatching denser. Make the area inside and around the calyx noticeably darker to show that it is recessed into the berry.

Adding hatching to the blueberry and darker shadows around the calyx.

We believe that it is useful to know how to draw a blueberry and other similar berries if you want to practice such a traditional genre of visual art as still life.

Such drawings can be made separately or included in larger compositions with other berries, fruits, and dishes.

Next, try to draw several blueberries together and use light and shadow to separate one berry from another.

If you like this theme, you can continue with our tutorial on how to draw a cranberry. The overall form is similarly simple, but the details at the top of the berry are different.
