How to Draw Usagi Yojimbo

Finished Usagi Yojimbo drawing with long ears, katana, robe, pants, and sandals.

Miyamoto Usagi is a character from the comic book Usagi Yojimbo. He is an anthropomorphic white rabbit ronin living in a world similar to 17th-century Japan. And as you can see, here we will show you how to draw Usagi Yojimbo in his characteristic samurai attire with a katana in his hands.

How to draw Usagi Yojimbo step by step

Step 1: Sketch Usagi’s basic figure

Let’s start with the skeleton of the rabbit samurai, which is drawn almost like the basic figure in our tutorial on drawing a samurai. First of all, sketch a large round head. Next, sketch the spine with the chest and pelvis. Complete the first step by sketching the arms and legs.

Step 2: Build Usagi’s body forms

Now let’s add some volume to our samurai. First of all, sketch two crossing lines on the face to mark the placement of the facial features. After that, sketch the torso and connect it to the head with a short cylindrical neck. Sketch the arms and legs with simple cylinders and circles. Make the thighs thick and the lower legs slightly narrower. Sketch the hands with simple forms and outline the feet at the ends of the legs.

Step 3: Sketch the face, clothes, and katana

Let’s outline the main details of the fighting rabbit. Sketch the facial features using the intersecting lines from the previous step as guides. Next, outline the long ears on the head. Make the ears very long and bend their upper parts to the right. Move to the body and sketch the clothing, then sketch the katana in his hands. Mark the overlapping collar and the wide sleeves.

Step 4: Refine Usagi’s head and ears

Now work on the details of Usagi Yojimbo’s head. Take a darker pencil or marker and carefully draw the facial features with clear lines. Draw the angular contours on both sides of the muzzle. Next, refine the contours of the head and long ears. Draw the band wrapped around their base.

Step 5: Draw the upper body details

With clear, dark lines, draw the outlines of the torso and arms. Draw the overlapping edges of the robe around the neck and chest. Add the two emblems on the chest. In the same step, draw the hands and katana in more detail. Refine the guard, handle, and blade.

Step 6: Refine the pants and sandals

In the previous step, we drew the upper part of Usagi Yojimbo, and now we will draw the lower part of the body. Draw the contours of the loose pants with smooth lines and add the folds. Do not repeat the exact contours of the legs underneath, because most of their form is hidden by the loose fabric. Draw several long folds running from the hips toward the knees and lower edges. Add the thick soles and crossing straps over the feet.

Anthropomorphism is one of the most common techniques used when drawing cartoon characters. Many central characters in cartoons and comics have human features.

The artist tries to maintain a fine balance between the animal and human aspects of the character. Often, the character has a completely or almost completely human build, with certain elements that allow you to associate them with a particular animal. In this tutorial, for example, these are the rabbit ears and muzzle. Most of his body is almost entirely human.

To learn how to depict such characters correctly or even create your own, you need to learn how to draw a cartoon man.

Once you have learned the basics, you can easily add various features and elements. Try doing this yourself by adding different animal features to a cartoon character of your own design. For further practice, try depicting other popular anthropomorphic characters. For example, draw a Ninja Turtle or Splinter.
