How to Draw Nick Riviera

This lesson will show you how to draw Dr. Nick Riviera from The Simpsons, a charismatic supporting character.
Nick Riviera follows the classic Simpsons drawing scheme established in the very first episodes, as this character has been part of the show for a long time, even though he does not appear very frequently.
He has large round eyes, minimalistic details, and characteristic elements shown in bold, simple shapes that indicate he is a doctor, most notably his lab coat.
All of these details are built upon the basic Simpsons character construction system, which is also characteristic of drawing Homer Simpson and other main and supporting characters. In this lesson’s method, we will first show you how to sketch the main form and then gradually add details from top to bottom.
How to draw Nick Riviera step by step
Step 1: Block in the character’s base forms
First, start with the basic shapes to create a foundation for the details. Sketch the cartoon character’s head as a circle and the torso as an elongated oval. Connect these two shapes with a pair of lines to create the neck.

Step 2: Sketch the arms and lower limbs
On the sides of the body, draw the sleeves as elongated rounded rectangles, ending at the bottom with basic hand outlines. In the lower part, beneath the torso, sketch the legs as two more elongated rectangles ending with boots.

Step 3: Draw Nick Riviera’s large round eyes
Once the main shapes are complete, begin gradually adding the key details, carefully moving from top to bottom. First, draw the eyes as two circles with small dots inside for the pupils. Then sketch the nose as a semi-oval shape.

Step 4: Sketch the characteristic hairstyle and ear
Now move to the upper part of the head and sketch Dr. Nick Riviera’s hairstyle, giving it its characteristic look. On the sides of the head, draw the ears in a semicircular shape. Inside, indicate the structure with a couple of light lines.

Step 5: Draw the smile of Dr. Nick Riviera
On the lower part of the face, draw the smile as a wide, elongated curved line. Above the upper lip, draw the mustache as a series of short diagonal lines.

Step 6: Draw the goatee and neck
Now, directly under the mouth, sketch a small goatee using zigzag lines. Refine and outline the neck, and erase the construction lines from the doctor’s head.

Step 7: Draw Nick Riviera’s collars and tie
Draw the lab coat collar of Dr. Nick Riviera in detail using long lines. Then sketch the outline of the shirt collar and the tie, consisting of a short upper part and a longer lower part.

Step 8: Extend the lab coat downward
Continue drawing Dr. Nick Riviera’s lab coat by adding the lower part. Draw the belt with a buckle in the center, as well as the outline of the pocket in the upper part.

Step 9: Draw the arms of Nick Riviera
Refine the outlines of the arms with smoother, cleaner lines, showing the rolled-up sleeves at the bottom. Then draw the cartoon hands, keeping in mind that The Simpsons characters have four fingers. On the lower part of the coat, draw a pocket with pens.

Step 10: Outline the doctor’s pants and boots
Finish the drawing of Dr. Nick Riviera’s figure by outlining the pants and drawing the boots. All shapes in the drawing should be clear and simple, without unnecessary details. Check the entire drawing and make sure there are no mistakes in proportions or symmetry.

This drawing lesson on Nick Riviera is in many ways similar to our cartoon doctor drawing lesson, but it has many important differences.
Note that in both cases we showed the process of drawing a cartoon doctor, yet the final results are fundamentally different, as is the step-by-step creation process.
This is because, although both versions fall under the term “cartoon,” they have completely different styles, origins, and overall approaches to drawing.
This difference is driven by the wide range of styles within the cartoon segment of visual art. So even though we are ultimately drawing a cartoon doctor, here we are specifically drawing a Simpsons character, which follows all the characteristic patterns of that animated series and must adhere to the design principles established at the very beginning of its creation.
