How to Draw Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four

Finished drawing of Mr. Fantastic stretching his arms toward the viewer

In this comic book drawing tutorial, we will show you how to draw Mr. Fantastic, one of the members of the Fantastic Four, step by step.

Mr. Fantastic’s real name is Reed Richards. Every Marvel fan knows this outstanding leader, who is also a brilliant scientist and a caring head of the family.

How to draw Mr. Fantastic step by step

Step 1: Outline Reed Richards’s head

First, draw a circle to represent Reed Richards’s head. Add two lines inside the circle. The vertical line will indicate facial symmetry, while the horizontal line will show the position of the eyes. Make sure the vertical line does not shift to the right or left.

Step 2: Sketch the enlarged palm

Next, sketch the palm. Pay attention to its size, as it is very large compared with the previously drawn head. The palm should appear much closer to the viewer than the head. Remember that Mr. Fantastic can stretch his body.

Step 3: Construct the stretched arm

Reed Richards now has deliberately exaggerated proportions. Sketch the arm on the left side of the page. The upper arm and forearm should be disproportionately long, while the palm should have a rounded shape.

Step 4: Add the superhero’s lower body

Draw the legs and lower torso of Mr. Fantastic . The groin area resembles an hourglass laid on its side. The front leg should be larger than the rear leg. This difference in size is created by the rules of perspective rather than Mr. Fantastic’s superpowers. Reed’s legs have otherwise normal human proportions.

Step 5: Draw the facial features of Mr. Fantastic

Add short lines to indicate the positions of the facial features and hair. Follow the guidelines established in the first step.

Step 6: Detail Reed Richards’s face

Carefully draw the face o. The upper edges of the ears should align with the eyebrows, while the lower edges should align with the tip of the nose.

Step 7: Refine the suit and hands

Step 8: Draw the Fantastic Four costume details

Draw the recognizable Fantastic Four logo on the chest. The Fantastic Four have worn many costumes and uniforms, but here Mr. Fantastic wears the classic version. Also define the contours of the legs and lower body.

Step 9: Apply comic book shadows

Finally, add the shadows. This Mr. Fantastic drawing is a clear example of the comic book style, so the shadows should be strong and contrasting. They should appear as solid black areas. The most effective method for creating comic book shadows involves two stages:

  • Drawing the outlines of the shadows;
  • Filling the selected areas with black. It is best to use a soft graphite pencil.
