How to Draw a Papaya

A papaya has an elongated, slightly irregular form that is wider toward one end, with a short stem and a characteristic longitudinal groove along the surface. In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw a papaya, convey its characteristic shape and surface details, and add simple hatched shadows to give the fruit volume.

When drawing this fruit, it is important to remember that the few longitudinal grooves, as well as the shadows, should follow the form and emphasize it. In the steps of this tutorial, we will try to show you how to do this.

How to draw a papaya step by step

Step 1: Sketch the papaya shape

First, draw the outline of the papaya. This fruit has an elongated asymmetrical shape with a pointed left end and a broader right end. Different papayas can have different outlines, so you do not need to reproduce the shape exactly as in our example.

Step 2: Draw the stem and surface line

Extend the short curved stem from the right end of the fruit. First, draw the sides of the stem with two smooth lines, then depict the cut end with an irregular oval shape. Begin the long line almost at the pointed tip and carry it across the papaya toward the base of the stem. The line should not be perfectly even. It should emphasize the irregular form of the fruit.

Step 3: Shade the papaya and cast shadow

Place the shadows mainly along the lower part and sides of the fruit. Form a narrow strip of tone next to the underside. Next, add a little shadow to the lower part of the groove to give this area additional volume. Add hatching to the curved stem itself, including its oval cut end. Do not forget to draw the cast shadow on the surface beneath the fruit.

A papaya, with its characteristic forms and features, still follows the fundamentals of art and requires basic artistic vision.
