How to Draw the Swamp Thing

In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw the Swamp Thing – a powerful DC Comics character whose body is made of living plant matter.
How to draw the Swamp Thing step by step
Step 1: Sketch the comic character’s figure
Begin this drawing tutorial with a stick figure. First, draw the head as a simple circle. Then add the lines of the body: the neck, spine, arms, and legs. The head and body of the Swamp Thing are slightly larger and wider than those of an ordinary human. Despite this, the character has the same general build as a tall man. The shoulders should be wider than the pelvis, and the total height should be equal to about eight head lengths. This stage is only needed to mark the position of the Swamp Thing on the sheet of paper, so use very light lines.

Step 2: Build the character’s silhouette
Now create the silhouette of the character. Draw the body as a shape that narrows toward the waist, then connect it to the head with a pair of lines to form the neck. Note that the shoulders are about the same size as the head. Next, outline the arms with cylindrical shapes and sketch the hands.

Step 3: Draw the facial details
It is time to draw the details. First, sketch the small, frowning eyes with horizontal eyebrows. Below them, draw the mouth. As you can see, the character does not have a visible nose, which is one of his distinctive features. Use the intersecting lines from the previous stage to place the facial details.

Step 4: Refine the torso details
Now move on to the body. There are many lines across the torso. Start with the larger details, such as the leaves over the left pectoral muscle. Then add the lines on the stomach and neck. After these actions, erase all unnecessary guidelines from the earlier stages.

Step 5: Draw the Swamp Thing’s arms
Now draw the arms of the Swamp Thing. Continue the shoulder lines to outline the wide deltoids, then add the biceps and triceps, which flow smoothly into the forearms. Next, refine the hands and mark the knuckles. After that, draw the leaves and stems. If you have trouble drawing the hands, take a closer look at our separate tutorial on this subject.

Step 6: Refine the lower body
Once the upper body is complete, move to the lower part of the character. First, draw the long strands hanging in front of the hips. Then use long, clear, and smooth lines to refine the leg muscles and the wavy growths covering the legs. Finish by drawing the outlines of the Swamp Thing’s feet.

Step 7: Add light shading
Apply light hatching to the areas that receive the least light. Darken the spaces beneath the leaves, between the vines, and along the sides of the torso and limbs. Keep the shading secondary to the line work so the plant details remain clear and readable.

Swamp Thing has a body made almost entirely of leaves, vines, bark, and other natural forms. To get more comfortable drawing this design, try sketching the character in a few different poses.
You can also use comic book covers and panels from different years as references, since the Swamp Thing’s appearance changes quite a bit between artists.

Hell of a birthday present. Lol
