How to Draw a Super Mutant

Finished drawing of a muscular Super Mutant from Fallout wearing a loincloth and bracers.

In previous drawing tutorials, we showed you how to draw the Vault Dweller and draw a ghoul. Here we will continue exploring the post-apocalyptic universe of Fallout and show you how to draw a Super Mutant.

How to draw a Super Mutant step by step

Step 1: Sketch the Super Mutant’s figure

A Super Mutant is essentially a heavily mutated human, so we will apply the basic principles of drawing a human figure. First, outline the head as an oval. Next, draw a line for the spine and mark the chest and pelvis along it. Use simple lines to sketch the arms and legs. Make the chest wider than that of an ordinary human figure.

Step 2: Build the mutant’s body

Draw two intersecting guidelines on the head to mark the placement of the facial features. After that, outline the wide neck and massive torso. Build the arms and legs using simple geometric forms, such as cylinders for the limbs and spheres for the joints. Make these forms noticeably thicker than those of an ordinary human figure.

Step 3: Outline the mutant’s outfit

Now add the basic details, starting with the head and moving down toward the feet. First, lightly mark the facial features and large ears. Next, sketch the bracers, loincloth, and boots. At this stage, use light lines to mark the placement and general shapes of these elements.

Step 4: Draw the Super Mutant’s face

Now begin drawing the final details. Using clear, dark lines, carefully draw the Super Mutant’s eyes, nose, and mouth in detail. Next, refine the contours of the head and large ears. Add wrinkles to the face and remove the unnecessary construction lines from the head.

Step 5: Refine the mutant’s torso

With the head complete, move down to the torso. First, carefully draw the thick neck. Next, refine the outer contours of the torso and outline the large pectoral muscles. Below them, draw the abdominal muscles and folds of skin. Remove the unnecessary guidelines from the torso.

Step 6: Draw the arms and bracers

Continue the contours of the torso and carefully outline the deltoids, biceps, and forearm muscles. The muscles should be large and clearly separated. Then, draw the hands in detail. Remove the unnecessary guidelines from the arms and add the remaining muscle contours and folds.

Step 7: Finish the mutant’s legs

Continue the contours of the torso and carefully draw the details of the loincloth. After that, outline the muscular legs and knee joints. Make the thighs and lower legs especially thick. Finally, draw the boots and erase any remaining construction lines.

Step 8: Add shadows with hatching

The Super Mutant drawing is almost complete, but the figure still needs shadows to show its volume. First, determine the direction of the light source, which comes from the upper left in our drawing. Then add shadows using dense hatching. Follow the forms of the muscles with your pencil strokes and make the shadows darker in the areas that receive less light.

The main thing to remember when drawing a Super Mutant is that its body is based on the human figure, but the muscles and overall body mass are deliberately exaggerated.

Try drawing another Super Mutant with a different build or outfit, using the same sequence of steps.

If you have trouble constructing the human figure when drawing a Super Mutant, return to our tutorial on how to draw a man.

There we explained all the most important aspects you need to know to depict human anatomy correctly. Once you know the basics, you will be able to draw the more exaggerated forms of Super Mutants with ease.
