How to Draw a Truck

Completed pickup truck drawing with detailed bodywork, wheels, suspension, highlights, and shadows.

Everyone can easily distinguish a truck from a regular car, but drawing one is a different matter. In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw a truck in a simple yet fairly realistic way.

How to draw a truck step by step

Step 1: Sketch the truck body

Like many of our guides, this tutorial on how to draw a pickup truck will begin with simple geometric shapes. In this case, start with several box-like forms, drawing them with very light straight lines. Use these shapes to mark the hood, cab, and cargo bed. Make sure the lines follow linear perspective.

Step 2: Sketch the grille and arches

Now add the most important details, including the large headlights and powerful grille at the front of the pickup. On the side, create the angular wheel arches and mark the fairly high window line. Continue using light lines while placing these details. These general details should be positioned correctly on the surfaces they belong to.

Step 3: Sketch the wheels and suspension

Continue building the pickup drawing, or rather creating the initial truck sketch. Add the large round wheels inside the arches using easily erasable lines. Next, mark the visible parts of the suspension beneath the body. Check the position and size of both wheels before moving to the final contours.

Step 4: Refine the truck front

So, the initial sketch of the truck is ready, and now we need to work on the details. By tradition, start with the front section and carefully trace the powerful grille with clear and dark lines. Next, refine the angular headlights and the surrounding contours. Remove the unnecessary guidelines from this area.

Step 5: Trace the hood and arch

The fifth stage will probably be the easiest in this truck drawing tutorial. Using dark lines, trace the large and powerful front wheel arch and the hood. Carefully follow the light contours from the previous steps, trying to make the lines smooth and clear. Remove all unnecessary guidelines from the front of the automobile.

Step 6: Draw the pickup cab

This step may be more difficult because here we will need to draw the cab of the pickup truck. Using the same dark and clear lines, trace the roof, windows, doors, and other visible details. Carefully follow the construction lines made earlier so that the cab keeps the correct shape. Erase unnecessary guidelines as you complete this area.

Step 7: Finish the truck’s rear body

In this step, finish creating the body of the pickup truck. Using clear lines, darken the cargo bed and trace the upper edge of its side panel. Next, refine the rear wheel arch and draw the rear bumper. Remove the remaining unnecessary construction lines from the rear part of the body.

Step 8: Refine the wheels and rims

Be especially careful when drawing the wheels of the pickup truck. They should be as round, clear, and similar in shape. Next, depict the round rims inside the tires and carefully refine their shapes. After that, get rid of all the remaining unnecessary guidelines from the drawing.

Step 9: Add shadows and highlights

Now add the final touches that will give the pickup truck drawing more volume and solidity. Using hatching, add shadows to the lower parts of the body and inside the wheel arches. Add a few light highlights to the windows and body surfaces.

We tried very hard to make the process of drawing the pickup truck as understandable and clear as possible.

Here we drew a large pickup truck with a fairly general appearance, so you can change its appearance and use the steps to create another similar vehicle.

For example, you can raise or lower the body and make the wheels larger to give your truck a different look.
