How to Draw a Rocket

A rocket is one of those objects that is very easy to draw by simplifying its forms. In this step-by-step tutorial, we will show you how to draw a rocket made up of fairly simple basic forms while still making it look quite realistic.
We decided not to add unnecessary elements and to leave them up to you, depicting only the details that are really needed to make the rocket recognizable. We will draw it launching upward, with clouds of smoke spreading out to the sides.
How to draw a rocket step by step
Step 1: Sketch the rocket’s three sections
Outline three long geometric shapes. The middle one should be longer than the other two. The rocket’s central body and side boosters are upright cylinders with tapered noses. Sketch their sides nearly parallel and their lower ends at the same level. Leave space below for the exhaust plume.

Step 2: Sketch flames and thick smoke
Use very light lines to sketch the flames and thick smoke beneath the rocket. Extend two long contours downward from the base to mark the exhaust plume. On either side, outline the smoke with a series of connected arcs of different sizes. Draw these clouds spreading toward the lower corners of the composition. The main outlines are complete, so let’s move on to the details.

Step 3: Refine the rocket’s body details
Use clear, dark lines to carefully refine the contours and details of the rocket’s body. Draw smooth curves toward the tip of each nose and straight lines along the side edges. Add a short engine nozzle beneath each of the three sections. Then erase the unnecessary guidelines from the body. Refine the exhaust outline with small, irregular curves and add a few longer lines inside the plume.

Step 4: Refine the smoke and add shadows
Carefully trace the flames and smoke beneath the rocket with wavy lines. Use dense hatching to add shadows to the rocket’s surface. Place short diagonal strokes along the right edges of the central body and side boosters. Leave most of the exhaust white and add a few soft patches of hatching beneath the curved edges of the smoke clouds.

As you could see, drawing a rocket is not very difficult, but the final result from the last step does not have to be the end of the drawing.
The basis of the entire construction here is cylinders: one for the central part and two for the side sections.
After that, you can add portholes, logos, or even make the rocket wider or more elongated and give it any proportions you like.
You can also change the overall form even more, add additional details, and draw a spacecraft with a similar basic shape.
