How to Draw an SUV

Finished SUV drawing with boxy body, large wheels, and realistic shading.

In this fairly easy but realistic tutorial, consisting of eight simple steps, we will show you how to draw an SUV.

Cars appeared more than a hundred years ago, and throughout the history of automobiles, the world has seen many different types of bodies.

One of the most popular is the SUV, or sport utility vehicle, which combines a large comfortable body with features associated with off-road vehicles.

How to draw an SUV step by step

Step 1: Sketch the SUV body

To avoid mistakes when drawing an SUV, first sketch the outlines of the body. This type of vehicle is characterized by a rather large and angular body with a high window frame. Using very light lines, outline the boxy SUV body and its tall upper section.

Step 2: Add the SUV details

Now turn the basic box from the previous step into something more like an SUV. Start at the front by depicting round headlights with square frames and a rectangular grille between them. With straight lines, outline the square windows and angular doors. Next, sketch a large rear-view mirror.

Adding the SUV headlights, grille, square windows, doors, and side mirror.

Step 3: Draw the wheels and arches

Continue adding important details to the SUV drawing. Mark the large wheels and angular wheel arches, then depict the bumper and side steps. Here we show how to draw an SUV using a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also known as the Geländewagen, as the basis. To depict another SUV, simply change the characteristic details of the vehicle.

Step 4: Refine the SUV front

In the initial steps, we outlined a rough sketch of the SUV, and now we will start refining the vehicle with clear and dark lines. Carefully draw the round headlights, rectangular grille, and front bumper. Add the large Mercedes-Benz emblem in the center of the grille and draw the registration plate below it.

Step 5: Outline the upper body

Now work on the upper part of the SUV drawing. Using clear and dark lines, trace the angular roof and equally angular windows. Refine the large side mirror, then remove all unnecessary guidelines from the upper part of the SUV.

Step 6: Detail the SUV side

Now refine the side of the SUV in the same way. Using clear and dark lines, draw the angular doors and add the handles. Next, depict the side step beneath the doors. Refine the rear part of the boxy body and trace the angular rear wheel arch.

Step 7: Draw the off-road wheels

Be especially careful when drawing the SUV wheels, as their shapes should be smooth and even. First, trace the large tires, making them as symmetrical as possible. Next, draw the rims in the centers of the wheels. Their large and solid appearance should correspond to the heavy, angular body of the off-road vehicle.

Step 8: Add shadows to the SUV

Now add the final details to the SUV drawing. First, darken the tires and the inner surfaces of the wheel arches. Next, add highlights to the windows and use hatching to draw shadows on the body, beneath the vehicle, and on other areas that receive less light.

So, this was a tutorial on how to draw an SUV. As mentioned above, you can use the same basic approach to draw different SUVs by changing the characteristic details of the vehicle.

Practicing different body shapes will also help you better understand how various types of cars are constructed.
