How to Draw Cheese

how to draw cheese featured image

In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw a piece of cheese. This guide is quite simple, but by following it carefully, you will end up with a realistic slice of cheese.

In the world, there are many different types of cheese, which can vary greatly in appearance. By using this lesson, you can draw almost any kind of cheese, adding specific distinctive details to your sketch.

So, if you are ready, scroll down the page, start the lesson, and find out how to sketch a realistic and dimensional slice of cheese!

How to draw cheese step by step

Step 1: Outline the first side of the slice

Start your cheese drawing by sketching a regular parallelogram – a four-sided shape with opposite sides parallel. This will represent one visible side of the cheese slice. Remember to draw these first lines very lightly so you can adjust them later if needed.

Step 2: Sketch the upper part of the slice

Next, draw a triangle on top of the parallelogram to indicate the top surface of cheese. The base of the triangle should be slightly rounded, as shown in our example. At this point, you’ve created the basic structure of your cheese drawing using two simple geometric shapes.

Step 3: Draw holes on the cheese surface

Now it’s time to turn this geometric shape into something that looks like cheese drawing. Begin adding holes on the surface of the slice, varying their sizes and positions. The holes should appear randomly distributed. These holes, by the way, are formed during the cheese-making process due to milk fermentation.

Step 4: Make the piece outline smooth and neat

Put your pencil aside and take an eraser. Carefully remove the construction lines, making the drawing of a cheese clean and neat. You can also add a few new holes or slightly adjust the shape of the existing ones to make them look more natural.

Step 5: Add shadows and volume to the cheese

To make the cheese drawing appear more three-dimensional and realistic, add shadows. First, determine the direction of the light source. Then start shading the darker areas, gradually moving toward the lighter ones. Apply the shadows softly to keep the volume natural. To make the cheese look more realistic and dimensional, add the cast shadow below the slice.

In this lesson, we drew a familiar and easily recognizable piece of cheese – the kind that can be seen both on the table and in many illustrations, cartoons, and comics.

However, the shape can always be changed. For example, you can sketch not only a slice but also an entire wheel of cheese.

The basic principles will differ slightly, but much of what you learned in this tutorial can be applied when drawing cheeses of other shapes.

Cheeses also come in many types, from Camembert to Mozzarella, and each can be represented in a completely different way.

Some have large holes that appear less frequently on the surface, while others have many smaller holes distributed more evenly across the body of the cheese.

In some, the holes are regular and symmetrical, while in others they are irregular and varied in shape. All these details can make your cheese drawing look more distinctive and unique compared to our example.

You can also make your cheese drawing more complex and detailed by adding more midtones and subtle tonal transitions. This will help you achieve a richer, more realistic, and individual result.

You can leave it black and white, as in our example, or paint it yellow.
