This lesson will show you how to draw a cartoon baby and demonstrate the distinctive features of constructing the human figure at different ages.

A person changes greatly throughout life, from infancy to old age, with appearance and overall proportions constantly evolving.

While drawing any person may seem like the same process at first glance, there are many nuances that must be considered when drawing the human figure at different ages.

Drawing a baby, an adult, and an elderly person shares the same foundation, but these nuances significantly change the overall approach.

Now let’s move on to practice and learn how to draw a cartoon baby and give it a really cute appearance.

How to draw a cartoon baby step by step

Step 1: Sketch the baby head shape

Start by sketching the cartoon baby’s head as a circle or an oval. The shape you choose here will influence the outline of the head and face in the following steps. Place it closer to the upper part of the page.

Step 2: Build the face construction lines

Draw a vertical line in the center of the face and cross it with a horizontal line. The intersection of these two lines marks the bridge of the nose and indicates the direction the head is facing. Slightly below the horizontal line, add a short mark for the nose, and a little lower, another short mark for the mouth.

Step 3: Draw the cartoon eyes of the baby

Using the construction lines from the previous step, begin drawing the cartoon eyes. Draw them as two simple ovals, placing them evenly on both sides of the central line. Inside, draw the pupils as simple black circles. Above the eyes, add the eyebrows using thick, arched lines.

Step 4: Sketch the nose, ear, and smile

Slightly below, using the short line you marked earlier, draw the nose as a simple curved arc. Beneath it, draw the baby’s smile by first sketching the upper edge of the mouth and then the lower edge. Inside, you can add a single tooth. On the side of the head, draw the ear in the shape of a semicircle. Also indicate the chin with another curved arc.

Step 5: Finalize the baby’s face details

Erase all the construction lines you drew earlier that are no longer part of the main drawing. Make the primary lines that form the face thicker and more visible. Outline the eyebrows and eyelashes with especially dark lines. If you notice any inaccuracies, erase those parts and draw the baby’s face again in the areas where corrections are needed.

Step 6: Draw the cartoon hands of the baby

With a couple of simple short lines, indicate the shoulders. Then draw the arms of the baby, giving them a soft, rounded appearance. First draw the upper arms, then the lower arms. At this stage, you can change the position of the arms as you prefer.

Step 7: Sketch the baby hands and pacifier

Continue the lines of the arms and draw the hands, adding five fingers to each. If you want to achieve a more cartoon-like appearance, you can draw four fingers on each hand instead. In the baby’s right hand, you can also draw a pacifier.

Step 8: Draw the cartoon clothes of the baby

You can draw any clothing on the baby, but we chose a classic option for cartoon characters – a diaper. Draw it using simple, smooth lines without going deeply into details. You can also add a safety pin for a more comedic effect.

Step 9: Shape the cartoon legs

The legs should be drawn in much the same way as the arms, using soft, rounded lines. Unlike an adult figure, babies have very small and rounded legs, especially in cartoon interpretations.

Step 10: Sketch the feet and socks

Draw the feet in socks and add a few folds to the cartoon baby clothes for a more interesting effect. Also erase any remaining construction lines if they are still visible, and check the entire baby drawing to make sure no unnecessary lines or unwanted shapes remain.

As you may have seen, drawing a baby largely follows the same process as drawing a cartoon man. However, there are important nuances discussed in this lesson that are worth emphasizing again.

The most important factor is proportions, as they are what primarily distinguish an adult from a baby. The head is noticeably larger in relation to the body, and the limbs appear softer and fuller.

Facial features in babies also differ significantly from those of adults: the eyes are larger, the nose is smaller, and the forehead is more prominent.

These childlike features are further emphasized in the cartoon style demonstrated in this lesson. All of these simple elements are important to remember each time you draw a baby.

As a child grows older, these features gradually lose their infant characteristics and begin to resemble those of an adult.

This also applies to the characteristic poses and movements of babies, which you can highlight in your drawings.

It is important not only to remember these principles but also to practice them regularly, so try repeating this drawing several times, depicting the baby from different angles.
