How to Draw a Cartoon Kitten

In this lesson, you will learn how to draw a cartoon kitten and how to visually emphasize the features of a young animal.

Before you start drawing, take a close look at our sample. Try to notice the key characteristics of this cute kitten.

First of all, the head is large in proportion to the body – this indicates that we are drawing a young kitten. You’ll also notice a minimal amount of detail on the torso and limbs, especially around the head.

This does not apply to the eyes, since in this drawing they are the most detailed element.

Earlier, we showed how to draw a cartoon cat, demonstrating methods for creating an adult cat in a cartoon style.

In this lesson, however, each step is created to result in a small kitten drawn in the style of classic animation. The stylistic approach in these two lessons also differs in order to show you completely different methods within the cartoon style.

How to draw a cartoon kitten step by step

Step 1: Sketch the basic forms of the kitten

To draw a cartoon kitten, you need to create a foundation made up of basic shapes, which will later be refined with details. Sketch the head as a circle, the chest as a small oval, and the lower part of the body as a larger circle. All of these shapes should slightly overlap one another.

Step 2: Draw the front limbs of the cartoon kitten

Now sketch the kitten’s front legs placed neatly side by side in a sitting pose. First outline the arms, then add the rounded paws at the bottom. Do not include any details at this stage, and avoid using dark, heavy lines in the early steps.

Step 3: Draw the tail of the cartoon kitten

Now draw a large, fluffy tail that slightly curves around the body of the cartoon kitten. Then add the visible parts of the hind legs, also folded in a sitting pose. Drawing cats in a seated position has its own structural specifics, so carefully follow the contours as shown.

Step 4: Sketch the head guidelines

Next, sketch the facial symmetry guidelines to help you place the features accurately in the following steps. At the top of the head, draw large ears – remember that in young kittens, the ears are proportionally larger than in adult cats. Along the sides of the head, outline the fur using soft, uneven lines.

Step 5: Draw the face of the cartoon kitten

Using the facial symmetry guidelines, draw the kitten’s large cartoon eyes as wide ovals. Inside each one, add smaller oval shapes for the pupils. One of the key elements that conveys both a cartoon look and a young age in living creatures is oversized eyes – this feature clearly distinguishes them from adult animals. Slightly below the eyes, draw a small cartoon-style triangular nose and the kitten’s mouth.

Step 6: Clean up the facial details

Now carefully erase all the construction lines from the central part of the cartoon kitten’s face, leaving only the contours and shapes necessary for the final drawing. Refine the eyes to give them a finished look, and darken selected facial lines to make the expression more defined. On both sides of the mouth and nose, draw three short lines to represent the whiskers.

Step 7: Refine the kitten’s head and ears

Carefully remove any remaining construction lines on the head and around the face. Refine the fur, ears, and the hair on the head to give them a clean, finished appearance. At this stage, you can also draw extra elements to make your cartoon kitten sketch more distinctive and individual.

Step 8: Detail and darken the kitten’s eyes

Color the cartoon kitten’s eyes black or a dark shade, leaving small highlights to emphasize both the stylized look and the young age of the animal. Notice that drawing cartoon eyes differs significantly from drawing a cat’s eyes in a realistic style.

Step 9: Add the toes and check proportions

Using very short strokes, add three small toes to each of the kitten’s paws. This is also a good moment to check the overall proportions of the drawing, especially the relationship between the head and the body, before moving on to more detailed refinement of your cartoon kitten.

Step 10: Add fur texture to the body

Below the head, in the chest area, carefully add fur texture using long, smooth lines. Do the same on the tail, giving it a fluffy appearance and indicating the fur in a simplified, schematic way. You can refine and add more detail to these shapes in the next stage.

Step 11: Finalize the cartoon kitten drawing

Trace the torso, limbs, and tail of the cartoon kitten with clean, dark lines. Do the same with the head, giving it a sharper and more finished appearance. Erase all remaining construction lines from the entire drawing. Bold, dark, and slightly thicker outlines are a defining characteristic of the animation style.

Now let’s take a closer look at the key points to keep in mind when drawing cartoon kittens and other animals. There are many visual methods for indicating age and style, and these artistic techniques often overlap.

For example, large expressive eyes, a relatively large head compared to the body, and a gentle facial expression are tools an artist can use to suggest a young age in an animal or a person.

Interestingly, the same techniques are also commonly used to create a cartoon character. In this case, we can see how these principles intersect.

The main difference lies in the overall stylistic approach. When drawing large eyes, a large head, and other youthful features, an artist may still maintain general realism and avoid pushing the image into a cartoon style.

This allows the artist to depict a young kitten, for example, without making it look stylized.

On the other hand, an artist may choose to draw an animal or a person in a cartoon style without emphasizing childlike traits.

In this example, we demonstrated how combining certain artistic techniques results in a cartoon kitten. You can confidently apply these same principles when creating cartoon versions of young animals of any kind.
